Dating with a Disability: How My Best Friend Met His Girlfriend

Dating is TOUGH! Whether or not you have a disability, it is hard at times to even simply put yourself out there. Today on the blog, I am sharing the story of how one of my best friends Chris met his girlfriend Kim. Chris is one of my best friends – he is, in fact, like a brother to me. Chris also has a disability and he has overcome a ton in his lifetime, and I am always so so so proud of him. After seeing me and Maggie’s story of how we met, Chris wanted to share his of how he and his girlfriend Kim met, which I couldn’t not let him do! Chris how shown me that anyone can do ANYTHING that they set their minds to and that our world is filled with oh so many possibilities!

Hi everyone! I’m so happy to write on Katie’s blog again, after hearing her wonderful story of how she met Maggie I thought I’d share my story of how me and Kim met and started dating. I hope you enjoy it!

When I was a freshman in high school I had the most wonderful teacher named Mrs. DiNardo who was loved by everyone of her students. She was a special Ed teacher and her classroom was for kids that were special Ed kids and I remember the room number being room 106.  One day she introduced me to Kim, from the moment we met we had great conversations about Disney movies music and sports. She is a packer  fan and I’m a giants fan  so we used to tease each other about our teams. From that day on, we got along so well every time we talked I would talk to her before my first class of the day and at lunch time. The other great thing was that she was religious and I found that we both go to the same church!

We became very close that one day Mrs. DiNardo told me she really liked me because we got along so well. Later that day we were on a field trip, and she asked me to her senior prom because she was 3 years older to me. I will never forget that because everyone called me lucky for going to a senior prom as a freshman, I happily said yes and I’m glad I did. We went together and had such a great time and everyone loved the way I was to her. Probably the moment that I started to like Kim was when she asked me to slow dance when a slow song came on, I have never done it before but I was more than happy to. We slow danced and the end we both smiled at each other, that’s when I know someday I might date this girl!😊

Flash forward a few years, I was busy finishing high school and Kim was figuring out where she wanted to work. We reconnected at the very beginning of 2020 before the start of the Covid 19 pandemic, we would go out to lunch together and take walks around the town of Pennington. One day we were talking, and she told me all the struggles that she has gone through in her life and then I realized I can relate to her with those things and that’s one of the things I love about our relationship. In the month of August I realized that I had feelings for her and I wanted to start a relationship with her, after asking her and talking with her super nice parents we all agreed and our first date was on August 22nd. It has been almost 5 months now and we have make great memories together and I can’t wait and pray for a happy future with her! I hope you guys enjoy the story and thanks for reading:)

Above all else, love is love and love is NEVER cancelled.

XOXO – Katie <3
