About Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

Situated between Nice and Monaco overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild also known as the “Pink palace” was once home to Baroness Beatrice de Rothschild, who used her massive inheritance post-divorce to build her dream estate. The estate was built by Beatrice in 1907-1912 and was designed by architect Aaron Messiah with its shape like the deck of a ship. This gorgeous pink Belle Epoque Villa houses a vast art collection and is surrounded by nine themed gardens: French garden, Spanish garden, Florentine garden, stone garden, Japanese garden, exotic garden, Provençal garden and rose garden.

Upon Beatrice’s death in 1934, she bequeathed her estate to the Académie des Beaux-Arts, which is part of the Institut de France. And, in 1938, the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild opened to the public in 1938 and earned its status as a French historical monument via classification in 1993.

When visiting the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, I highly recommend stopping by their onsite Restaurant & Beatrice Tea-Room even if just for a glass of wine (or Spritz like myself!). Getting There

One key aspect about visiting the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is that it is housed a bit outside of both Nice and Monte Carlo in the heart of the French Riviera, hence, there is a bit of planning involved in getting there. It is easiest to drive or use ride share to get there. There is free onsite parking, too, if you choose to rent a car, and there is an easy spot for rideshares to pick up and drop off.

Besides driving there, while I won’t spend too much time outlining how to get to the Villa from Nice or Monaco (as I opted to use Uber to get there and back from Nice, which is easy and cost under 20 Euros each way), there is an excellent resource which outlines how to get there if you opt to use public transportation to and from the Villa, however, it will take you more time than driving.

Beyond going on your own to the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, it is also worth noting that there are multiple tour operators that run group tours to the Villa as a part of a day tour across the French Riviera. Know Before You Go

• To ensure there are no private events at the Villa, be sure to check out their website for the most up-to-date information before visiting.
• It is worth noting that once at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, there are a few uphill/downhill walks within its 9 gorgeous gardens. Most visitors to Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild will have to walk this uphill/downhill walk to get to/from the palace especially when walking through the gardens. Once at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, there are marble staircases and walkways. Be sure to plan accordingly, especially if there is rain.
• If you booked a timed entry experience, Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is a timed experience, but typically visitors can still enter on the day that they booked for – be sure to arrive at least 10-15 minutes before your timed the entry slot.
• Take a moment to savor this incredible palace and gallery and all of its masterpieces within it! Truly, Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is a magnificent work of art like no other!!
• Personally, I would budget 2-4 hours at Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild when visiting. It is SO easy to get lost in the museums and gardens and you’ll want to maximize your time there. Truly, you won’t want to miss anything!!
• Cameras are allowed, however, flash photography is prohibited.
• Wear comfortable, suitable shoes for uphill climbing on marble staircases and in the gardens – which are present through parts of the palace and its magnificent gardens. In fact, I have a guide on comfortable + stylish flats for travel if you need any inspiration!

Is Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild Worth Visiting?!

YES!!!! Personally, I have always been someone who wants to go out of my way to visit the estate and gardens when in Europe, especially a pink one!!!

This Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild reviews isn’t complete without my own personal verdict! Not only was the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild truly have it all within its interiors and exteriors and of course its gardens, but it also boasts so many stunning views of the Mediterranean and French Riviera. I also LOVE how the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild offers an onsite restaurant and tea room to, indeed make it worth a wonderful morning or afternoon visit. 

Some of the most breathtaking views of the French Riviera that I ever encountered happened to be at Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild! Visiting this stunning villa was one of my best highlights of my trip to the South of France!
