About Sweeney’s Cruise Co. Loch Lomond

Sweeney’s Cruise Co. has been operating on Loch Lomond since the 1880’s and, to this day, allows visitors to experience the beauty of the loch. Sweeney’s Cruise Co boasts a diverse selection of loch-side cruises and tours, having a fleet our 4 different sized vessels, with each of them being enhanced by onboard commentary from the talented Scottish actor and musician Thoren Ferguson.
Tour offerings by Sweeney’s Cruise Co. offer departures from towns alongside Loch Lomond and include (personally, I opted for the Island Discovery cruise!):
- Experience Cruise (1 hour) – Balloch Departure
- Island Discovery (2 hours) – Balloch Departure
- Evening Cruise (90 minutes) – Balloch Depature
- Into The Highlands (70 minutes) – Loch Lomond Shores Departure
- Ferry Service (1 hour) – Balloch/Luss Departure
- Ferry Service (1 hour) – Luss/Balmaha Depature
- Island Safari (75 minutes) – Luss Departure
In addition to sightseeing tours and cruises alongside the Loch, Sweeney’s Cruise Co. offers a variety of private charter packages. Find out more information about private charters here.
If departing from Balloch for your loch cruise, then be sure to grab a snack and a drink at Monkey Island Cafe Bar before or after your adventure. Personally, I enjoyed a Spritz and some crisps (what the Brits call potato chips!) before embarking on my cruise!

Getting There
Just 30 minutes from Glasgow and 90 minutes from Edinburgh via train, Loch Lomond (and Sweeney’s Cruise Co.) is easily reachable and makes for the perfect day trip from either of Scotland’s two largest cities. Visitors can drive or take the train. Since I was staying in Glasgow, I took ScotRail to Balloch via Glasgow Queen station.
From Balloch train station, Sweeney’s Cruise Co.’s tours takeoff via an easy walk across the street. Visitors while they wait can easily hang out at and grab a bite or sip at Monkey Island Cafe Bar.

Note: Booking ScotRail Tickets
When booking a ticket with ScotRail, I recommend, from personal experience, booking a train ticket where you can depart from either train station each way at any time. My ScotRail Tickets were under 10 British pounds each way!
I also highly advise downloading the ScotRail app to have all of your eTickets at your fingertips, which you can do so upon booking your train tickets and creating an account.
Nevertheless, look no further than Sweeney’s Cruise Co. website for more information on their locations and getting there.
Know Before You Go
Before you embark on your Sweeney’s Cruise Co. experience, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Sweeney’s Cruise Co. Loch Lomond Cruises are a timed experience and cruises leave at the time you booked it for – be sure to arrive at least 10-15 minutes before your timed entry slot for boarding.
- Wear comfortable, suitable shoes for uphill climbing on marble staircases and in the gardens – which are present through parts of the palace. In fact, I have a guide on comfortable + stylish flats for travel if you need any inspiration!
- Be sure to charge up your devices before boarding for your lake-side cruise, as you’ll want to take photos throughout your tour!
- Personally, I would budget 2-4 hours when visiting Loch Lomond, depending on how long your cruise is for. It is SO easy to get lost in the magic of Loch Lomond. Truly, you won’t want to miss anything!!
To prepare for your Sweeney’s Loch Lomond Cruise, be sure to look at these frequently asked questions to ensure you have a wonderful experience. Above all else, HAVE FUN!

Is Sweeney’s Cruise Co. Loch Lomond Worth The Hype?!
YES!!!!
Personally, I found Sweeney’s Cruise Co. Loch Lomond is truly worth the hype. I had visited Loch Lomond in the Summer of 2018 and didn’t really get much out of it, however, with my tour through Sweeney’s, I learned so much about Loch Lomond and its islands (which I never knew were there!). Throughout my lakeside tour, I felt inspired to want to visit the gateway to the Scottish Highlands again! Third times the charm am I right?!?!

Wrap-Up

Overall, I hope this Sweeney’s Cruise Co. Loch Lomond review sheds some light onto how wonderful and relaxing this lakeside cruise was. Happy travels, friends!!
