Casanel Vineyards & Winery Review

As a wine lover, I feel sooo grateful to call Virginia my home due to the many vineyards and wineries that also call my state home. One of the biggest things about many of Virginia’s vineyards is that they are proudly family-owned. Casanel Vineyards & Winery is truly no exception — family is at the heart of everything there which makes it such a special spot to add to your Virginia winery bucket list. This blog post will dive into all of what makes Casanel Vineyards & Winery, such a special and inclusive spot to visit for everyone in your crew.

Casanel Vineyards & Winery Review

This Casanel Vineyards & Winery Review will be split into 3 sections: Getting There, About Casanel Vineyards & Winery + Plan Your Visit, and My Experience.

Getting There:

Located just about 10 minutes outside of downtown Leesburg, Virginia, Casanel Vineyards truly feels as if it’s in another world away! It is worth noting that Casanel Vineyards is located off of gravel roads. To spend less time on the gravel roads, then it is suggested to plan your travel via Business 7/East Colonial Highway as opposed to Routes 15 and 704. At the same time, it is highly suggested that you drive to reach the vineyard. Luckily, Northern Virginia has several rental car options to choose from. If coming from Washington, DC without a car, the nearest Metro stop is Ashburn Metro Station which is the last stop on the Silver Line and about a 25+ minute drive away.

Address: 17952 and 17956 Canby Road, Leesburg, VA 20175

About Casanel Vineyards & Winery + Plan Your Visit:

Shaped in their three core values of people, passion, and a sense of place, owners Casey and Nelson DeSouza planted their roots at what is now Casanel Vineyards & Winery in 2006. With a lot of hard work, authenticity, and a  whole lot of celebration, the DeSouza’s have created a place where everyone can come together no matter who they are for a glass of wine (or a mocktail) and leave having a great time. Today, the values of people, passion, and a sense of place still reign true at Casanel as the winery has several offerings to enjoy whether it be enjoying a glass or flight in their tasting room or outside at their patio or balcony, or a stroll around the grounds’ gazebo, everyone will be sure to have a great time!

Casanel Vineyards & Winery has PLENTY of offerings for you to enjoy upon planning your visit! These offerings include:

  • Self-Guided Wine Tastings – including glasses, bottles, and wine flights
  • Guided Wine Tastings – A staff member in the tasting room will walk you through not only the story of the family behind Casanel, but also give you a 1oz pour of 7 different wines.
  • Mocktails – you heard me right! A variety of mocktails are offered on the tasting room’s menu, to ensure everyone has a great winery experience!!
  • Tours – Tours of the grounds and winemaking experience at Casanel are available for parties of 6+ to enjoy. Tours cost $25/person and sturdy shoes are recommended.
  • Events – Whether on their website or social media pages, I was truly amazed at Casanel’s presence in the Northern Virginia region and strong partnerships with our local businesses. Casanel hosts several events both on their grounds and beyond that appeal to a variety of interests and hobbies. See more on events here.

When planning your visit to Casanel Vineyards & Winery, it is advised to check their website to ensure that they are open when you plan to visit and to ensure if a reservation is required for your party that you do so in advance. At the same time, children are welcome inside the tasting room and beyond at Casanel. Whereas, pets are welcome outside only and they must be well-behaved and on a leash. Truly, everyone is welcome at Casanel but all visitors must be sure to plan their visit in advance. See more on planning your visit here.

My Experience:

While at Casanel, I took part in a guided wine tasting, which as previously mentioned, includes a 1oz pour of 7 different wines. As someone who personally prefers dry wines, I was in luck as most of Casanel’s wines are for those with a dryer wine palette. It is also important to note that taste of the wines at Casanel (as well as other vineyards!) is determined by the weather conditions year-after-year which affects wine harvest and the taste of the wines. During my guided tasting I tried the following wines – some of which pay tribute to the owners and family members that make Casanel, Casanel:

  • 2024 Ellianna – Estate Pinot Gris
  • 2024 Chardonnay – 100% Estate Chardonnay
  • 2024 Jose Rose – A rose made from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Petit Verdot, and Norton
  • 2021 Casey’s Agape – A red wine blend Nnmed in honor of owner Casey
  • 2020 C4 Cullen’s Cabernet Sauvignon – 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 2021 Petit Verdot – Full bodied with Lucious acidity and expressive flavors of black and blue fruits, savory, umami notes, and a lengthy finish
  • 2021 N2 (Nelson’s Norton) – 100% Estate Norton grapes

Learn more about the wines at Casanel here.

At the same time, I LOVED getting the chance to talk with those who work at Casanel throughout my guided tasting experience. One of the most beautiful aspects of visiting Casanel is that the DeSouza’s embrace and value everyone who walks through their doors, whether it be somebody who works in the tasting room or winemakers or visitors. Everyone is truly celebrated and loved as they are at Casanel which is something that I noticed right away!

Wrap-Up:

Casanel Vineyards & Winery is such a special place. While there, I truly saw how those who work there and regularly visit love it so dearly. From the heart that goes into making their wines to the experience as a visitor tasting their wines and having a good time (regardless of if you drink or not!), the DeSouza’s values of people, passion, and a sense of place still reign true to this day. Til next time!!

A special thank you to Reserve Pass and Casanel Vineyards & Winery for coordinating my visit and sponsoring today’s blog post. Without their support, The Pink Chickadee wouldn’t be where it is today!

When Do The Cherry Blossoms Bloom in Washington, DC?

***Please note that this When Do The Cherry Blossoms Bloom in Washington, DC? Guide will be updated and recirculated periodically to reflect the most up-to-date dining scene. This list was most recently updated as of November 2025.***

One of the biggest blessings about living in the Washington, DC area is getting to take part in the city’s National Cherry Blossom Festival yearly. Millions of visitors (perhaps, like yourself!) flock to Washington, DC every year for the National Cherry Blossom Festival. I have felt SOOOO lucky to host some friends and will continue to host some friends who visit to see the cherry blossoms here! While the cherry blossoms are such an exciting sight to see here in Washington, DC (and beyond the city, too!), it can be pretty tricky to time your visit as to when the cherry blossoms bloom. That all being said, this When Do The Cherry Blossoms Bloom in Washington, DC? Guide will outline based on previous years when the cherry blossoms could and will bloom.

When Do The Cherry Blossoms Bloom in Washington, DC?

Planning a trip to see the Cherry Blossoms bloom in Washington, DC?!?! Book your stay today using Booking.com or Hotels.com. I also highly recommend reserving tours, excursions, and experiences in the nation’s capital in advance, too!

This guide will be split into 4 sections: The National Cherry Blossom Festival, About The Cherry Trees, When Do the Cherry Blossoms Bloom?, and Tips for Visiting the Washington, DC Cherry Blossoms.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival

To celebrate the cherry blossoms blooming in Washington, DC, the city hosts its annual National Cherry Blossom Festival. This festival corresponds with the peak bloom of the cherry blossom trees. The National Cherry Blossom Festival’s story begins in 1912 when Japan gifted the United States 3,000 cherry trees. On March 27, 1912, First Lady Helen Herron Taft and Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador planted the first two trees gifted from Japan on Washington, DC’s Tidal Basin. Since First Lady Taft’s coordination and involvement in the roots of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, United States First Ladies have took part in the festival’s festivities and preservation of the cherry trees. Today, the National Cherry Blossom Festival includes several signature events, including Opening Ceremony, Petalpalozza, Parade, and Blossom Kite Festival.

The next National Cherry Blossom Festival will take place from March 20-April 12, 2026. See more information on the National Cherry Blossom Festival here.

About The Cherry Trees

The cherry blossoms bloom from the cherry trees. It is important to note that there are not one, but rather ELEVEN varieties of cherry trees here in Washington, DC (and, hence, SOOOO many different types of cherry blossoms to enjoy here in the nation’s capital!). Alongside, the cherry trees, there is also a Magnolia tree variety that blooms into Pink, cherry tree-like blooms during cherry blossom season, which I will share more about in this section, too.

The Cherry Tree Varieties

There are a total of 11 cherry tree varieties in Washington, DC’s Tidal Basin and into the Washington Monument grounds, according to the National Park Service. The majority of the cherry blossom trees in this location are Yoshino Cherry trees (about 70%), which are white, have 3-5 petals, and almond-scented. The second-largest species is the Kwanzan Cherry tree, which is Pink with 30+ petals, making up about 13% of the Tidal Basin’s cherry trees. In addition to the well-known Yoshino and Kwanzan cherry trees, there are several other species of cherry tree, including the Akebono, Sargent, and Okame.

To learn more about Washington, DC’s cherry tree species, then look no further than these excellent resources from the National Park Service, the National Cherry Blossom Festival, and WUSA9.

The Magnolia Tree (not a cherry tree variety but a local favorite!)

Cherry Blossoms are not the only Pink trees that bloom in the Spring in Washington, DC. The Magnolia Tree is another Pink tree that blooms here, too. The Magnolia Tree blooms with large pink and white flowers. Popular locations to view the Magnolia tree in and around Washington, DC include: the Enid A. Haupt Garden (also known apart of the Smithsonian Gardens behind the Smithsonian Castle), Rawlins Park, and the George Mason Memorial.

SO, When Do The Cherry Blossoms Bloom?

ANDDDDD, now for the reason that you’ve probably clicked on this post …. when do the cherry blossoms bloom in Washington, DC?! The answer isn’t a one-size fits all response, due to the local weather conditions that vary each year. However, based on the 2022-2025 peak bloom, typically the last week in March-first week in April is your best shot at catching those cherry blossoms blooming. However, before you go booking your ultimate Washington, DC Cherry Blossom vacation, be sure to check out the 2026 Peak Bloom Forecasts by the Cherry Blossom Watch 2026 website, as it offers the most accurate and in-depth look into when do the cherry blossoms bloom in Washington, DC.

Magnolia Trees: The Magnolia trees tend to bloom a bit earlier than the cherry trees. Typically, they bloom the first-second week of March.

Tips for Visiting the Washington, DC Cherry Blossoms at The Tidal Basin

There are several things that one must keep in mind when visiting the Washington, DC Cherry Blossoms at peak bloom. And, while visiting the cherry blossoms is typically packed with visitors both from near and far like yourself, truly, it is an experience of a lifetime!

Note: This section will solely focus on visiting the Washington, DC Cherry Blossoms at the Tidal Basin as well as around the National Mall (specifically near the Washington Monument). It is worth noting that although not mentioned in this section, there are several other locations across the Washington, DC area to view cherry blossoms in peak bloom.

Below, I have listed out some tips for Visiting the Washington, DC Cherry Blossoms at the Tidal Basin:

  • Use public transportation to get there! Your nearest stop will be the Smithsonian Metro Station, which is accessible along the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines. When taking Metro, it will be PACKED especially if you go on the weekends. Be sure to plan your trip using Metro’s app + website and allow for extra time.
  • The walk from the Smithsonian Metro Station to the Tidal Basin is about 10-15 minutes. The Tidal Basin is behind the Washington Monument which is an excellent place to take photos on your way there (or back!). Walk towards the Washington Monument. Be prepared to walk and follow the crowds to ensure you don’t get lost!
  • Be prepared for crowds, especially on the weekends!
  • When taking photos, don’t be afraid to be assertive, but, above all else, be kind and mindful of other people.
  • If you struggle with seasonal allergies, be prepared and take all the allergy meds beforehand!
  • To avoid the crowds, try visiting the Tidal Basin on a weekday and/or before 8am/at golden hour.

Above all else, be sure to enjoy the moment and HAVE FUN!

Wrap-Up

The National Cherry Blossom Festival is one of my favorite events of the year! Personally, I feel extremely lucky to live close to the nation’s capital, so that when the cherry blossoms bloom in Washington, DC, then I am able to go and see them and enjoy them. Truly, visiting the cherry blossoms in full bloom in Washington, DC is such a privilege to be able to do and a great once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many of us to experience.

Milken Center For Advancing The American Dream Guide

***Please note that this Milken Center For Advancing The American Dream Guide will be updated and recirculated periodically to reflect the most up-to-date information. This list was most recently updated as of October 2025.***

Currently, over on Instagram (let’s be friends @_thepinkchickadee), a brand-new exhibit aka the Milken Center For Advancing The American Dream is ALLL the buzz right now! As somebody who is proud to call the Washington, DC area her home and LOVES checking out all of the fun and new things to do in my own city, I *had* to see what the hype was all about. Since I know many of y’all are planning your experience at the Milken Center as well, I figured I would share my experiences in this guide.

Milken Center For Advancing The American Dream Guide

Looking for lodging and/or additional things to do in Washington, DC?! don’t fear! There are plenty of unique activities, tours, and experiences to choose from.

Getting There:

The Milken Center For Advancing The American Dream is located in the heart of downtown Washington, DC with close proximity to the White House, the U.S. Treasury Building, and offers incredible views of the Washington Monument. There is no onsite parking, however, there are nearby parking garages (I use Park Whiz to reserve!) if you choose to drive into the city. However, I prefer to use public transit/the subway which is known as Metro in Washington, DC. It is a quick and easy walk from the following Metro stations:

  • McPherson Square – access to the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines: 5 minutes
  • Metro Center – access to the Blue, Orange, Red, and Silver lines: 10 minutes
  • Gallery Place – access to the Green, Red, and Yellow lines: 17 minutes

In addition to the White House and a handful of Metro stations, this museum is in close proximity to the notable Old Ebbitt Grill – Washington, DC’s Oldest Saloon, which I share my experience dining at here.

Admission:

One of the most AMAZING things about the Milken Center For Advancing The American Dream is that admission is free for all visitors to explore all exhibits except for the Holodeck Experience. However, it is worth noting that to ensure you have a slot to visit especially from out of town that you should reserve your tickets in advance. For the Holodeck Experience, admission costs $15/person and must be reserved in advance. Tickets for both general admission and the Holodeck Experience can be reserved here.

It is worth noting that this review will focus on both the exhibitions via general admission and the Holodeck Experience.

About Milken Center For Advancing The American Dream:

The Milken Center For Advancing The American Dream is a cultural institution focused on inspiring and empowering pathways for everyone to find opportunity and achieve their dreams. Focusing on four pillars: Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Health and Medical Research, Education and the Educator, and Access to Capital and Financial Empowerment. Through the center’s research and regular public programs and exhibitions, the goal of the Milken Center is to explore and empower everyone to see and achieve the possibilities ahead. One of the notable initiatives that the center has been focusing on and showcases within its exhibits and notably highlighted throughout the Holodeck Experience is the American Dream Video Project, where 10,000+ stories of the American Dream are shared to inspire us all. Read more about the Milken Center here.

Highlights of the exhibition include:

  • The Tree of Generations
  • The Word Cloud
  • Hologram Ambassadors
  • The Holodeck Experience

Read more and check out the latest exhibitions here.

My Experience:

I am going to split my experience at the Milken Center For Advancing The American Dream into two sections: General Admission + Exhibitions and The Holodeck Experience.

However, it is worth mentioning that the architecture of the center is stunning and worth several photos and admiration!!

General Admission + Exhibitions:

Upon entering the Milken Center, I was greeted by the most friendly staff who ensured that all visitors had a good experience and knew where to go and what to see based on their personal interests. Since I had booked the Holodeck Experience in addition to the exhibits within a General Admission ticket, the staff also let me know where to go and when to arrive for that experience, which was super helpful! Next up was exploring the 5 floors of amazing exhibitions to visit. As previously mentioned, the Milken Center For Advancing The American Dream focuses on four pillars: Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Health and Medical Research, Education and the Educator, and Access to Capital and Financial Empowerment. Each of these four pillars are focused on within their own exhibits throughout the museum and shared some of the 10,000+ stories of the American dream within them. There were also several statistics shared that pertains to each of the four pillars throughout their respective exhibits. Throughout the exhibits, there were extremely interactive experiences, making it such a kid-friendly and accessible experience for all! At the same time, each exhibit highlighted a diverse range of stories, whether it be those who started their own business, found a fulfilling career in corporate, as a teacher, in healthcare, or something else, or empowered others to discover and achieve their own American dream. The common denominator of it all: there is opportunity and possibility at every corner for everyone!

There is also a gorgeous onsite cafe at the Milken Center! Decked out in all-things floral and tropical, I admired this beautiful cafe that I saw from the stairwell and throughout the museums due to the several windows that showed it off. Although I did not dine there during my visit, I did snap a photo in front of this bright and bubbly oasis in the nation’s capital.

The Holodeck Experience:

The Holodeck Experience is an interactive and immersive experience into the story machine. In addition to some fun interactions, visitors get to sit back and get up close and learn from some incredible Americans who achieved their American Dream and shared their inspiring stories filled with perseverance, grit, and a lot of hard work. If the exhibits weren’t enough to leave me feeling just a huge wave of confidence and gratitude and those feel-good feels, then the Holodeck Experience truly topped that all off! Trust me, it is worth it!!

It is worth noting that visitors must reserve their General Admission ticket before reserving their Holodeck Experience ticket which can be done at the same time and scanned with the same QR code. The Holodeck Experience lasts approximately 20-25 minutes and no photos/videos are allowed throughout it.

Wrap-Up:

As I stepped foot back onto the streets of Washington, DC, I felt a HUGE wave of empowerment and hope fly over me. Truly, I felt extremely inspired and empowered throughout my entire time strolling throughout the exhibits and taking part in the Holodeck Experience. It is a beautiful thing to know that the Milken Center strives to bring to the forefront that everyone has the opportunity and possibility, no matter who they are or their background, to make their dreams come true. Whether it be learning someone’s story as a teacher inspiring an astronaut to take off into outer space, or somebody born into poverty who started their own successful business, anything is possible and the Milken Center For Advancing The American Dream reminded me of that. At the same time, I hope that if you choose to visit that it reminds you that your dreams can come true, too.

Tea Around Town in Washington, DC Review

Ever since Tea Around Town made its Washington, DC debut, I have been wanting to experience it myself. To end this year’s National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC, my friend Briana invited me and some of our friends out to celebrate her Birthday in style via Tea Around Town. Today, I am going to be sharing my authentic Tea Around in Washington, DC review. I will note that this post is not sponsored and is fully me and my friends’ opinions from our experience. Nevertheless, we had a FABULOUS time at Tea Around Town in Washington, DC!

Tea Around Town in Washington, DC Review

About Tea Around Town:

You’ve probably seen others sharing their own Tea Around Town experiences over on social media and may be wondering … what exactly is it?! Tea Around Town is a 90-minute unique sightseeing and high tea experience where guests get to enjoy a high tea while on a double decker bus sightseeing around town. The double decker bus is decked out in all-things PINK for a lovely high tea. All guests are given complimentary water and high tea treats, from sweets to savory, and samples of four different teas all while listening to lovely music and being given a guided bus tour of the city that they are in. Every guest gets to take home an adorable souvenir tumbler to commemorate the occasion!

Currently, Tea Around Town is offering high teas and tours in the following cities:

  • Washington, DC
  • New York City
  • Houston
  • Dallas
  • Atlanta
  • Philadelphia

Tea Around Town also has two different fares for guests to choose from:

  • Petite – offering a private table, high tea, 360 degrees sky deck seating, and a souvenir tumbler

My Experience:

Now that you know a bit more about Tea Around Town, it’s time for my Tea Around Town in Washington, DC review! As previously mentioned, this post is not sponsored and contains my own honest and authentic opinions as well as if I would do this experience again.

It is important to note that all Tea Around Town guests must be approximately 15 minutes early for prompt boarding and tour takeoff. Each of us arrived promptly for boarding and were excitedly greeted by the ultra-kind Tea Around Town staff on-board. In terms of accessibility as we were on the top level of the double decker bus, the staff kindly assisted each of us as we entered and departed to make it a as seamless as possible process. When it comes to seating, there were 6 of us celebrating Briana’s birthday for our lovely high tea experience and tour and we were seated on the same row with a table for four and a table for two with an aisle separating us. The seating arrangements made our experience perfect for interacting with one another and truly getting to celebrate Briana and catch up. Overall, the boarding process was lovely and ultra-accommodating!

Once our bus took off to show off Washington, DC to us, our high tea began! Upon arrival all of our high tea eats (one three tier platter per group of two!), souvenir cup, and complimentary water and mocktails were waiting for us. Our high tea eats were covered in clear wrap, which was honestly a bit of a tedious and annoying process to unwrap. Honestly, it’s something I wished that our staff would have helped us with. Throughout our high tea experience, we were given pours of four unique teas – which honestly I don’t remember what they were – but they were lovely to taste. As for the high tea eats, I wasn’t the biggest fan of how they tasted and neither did those in my party. They felt like pre-packaged airline food and nothing really special and exciting. I honestly didn’t eat a ton and was glad that I had brunch beforehand. When it came to the teas, I felt a bit rushed when the staff came back for more pours of the four teas. I wanted to truly savor the teas that I was given, and I felt a bit rushed. When the staff came around for the next tea, we were sometimes still working on the previous tea. Given the cost of the experience ($100+ with tax and fees) I would have liked to enjoy better food for our high tea experience.

Throughout our tour, we were able to simply chat and enjoy a high tea with those that we came with. We went all around Washington, DC from the Capitol to the Jefferson Memorial to everything in between. Each city has its own unique route and routes can change given city events. One of the things that my group and I struggled with was hearing the guided tour portion of our Tea Around Town experience. There was a lovely guide sharing all of the tea on Washington, DC’s sights to see, however, we continuously struggled amongst the ongoing music and talking to really hear what was being said. Thus, if you’re looking to enjoy a nice sightseeing tour of the city in which you’re doing Tea Around Town in, I would not recommend this vendor for that. Rather, Tea Around Town is more for the high tea experience on a sightseeing bus with a limited guided experience.

One of the highlights that we all experienced on our Tea Around Town experience was the enthusiasm from the lovely staff. The people truly made our experience special and they were so hospitable the entire time and lovely to talk to! While on board, the staff sang “Happy Birthday” to Briana and our fellow Tea Around Town guests celebrating their birthdays which was SOOO special. And, one of the fellow guests on board out of the kindness of her heart used her mega singing talent to beautifully serenade Briana for her birthday. The personal touches and the people we met throughout our experience were LOVELY!

Would I Do Tea Around Town again?!

No.

Overall, Tea Around Town in Washington, DC was a nice one-time experience. It was a great venue for celebrating Briana’s birthday and to truly allow her to feel special on her special day. And while the people and entertainment were great while on board, the lack of a guided tour, the rushed pouring of teas, and the not-so delicious high tea eats make Tea Around Town something that I would do only once. Personally, I feel that this is a great experience to do once if you really want to, especially if it’s for a fun celebratory experience such as a birthday, Bachelorette, etc. It’s fun to dress up and be with those that you love! However, I would not recommend Tea Around Town if you’re looking for a high tea experience or a sightseeing bus tour of a new-to-you city – I would go elsewhere either way especially for the cost. Honestly, at the end of the day, I feel you go on Tea Around Town for the hype of it and for the vibes and less for the food and high tea experience. It’s a great time to connect and celebrate with others once but not twice.

Wrap-Up:

I loved experiencing Tea Around Town in Washington, DC as a special celebration for Briana and those that we all love. I am so grateful that I got to experience Tea Around Town for myself. Overall, if you want to give Tea Around Town a try, I say do so!

Visiting the Washington National Zoo’s Giant Pandas Guide

***Please note that this Visiting the National Zoo’s Giant Pandas Guide was written and contains the most up-to-date information as of October 2025. This most will be updated and re-circulated periodically when applicable.***

THE PANDAS ARE BAAAACCKKK!!!! At Washington, DC’s National Zoo over the decades, seeing the giant pandas have become a popular attraction to visitors from all across the world. Over on my Instagram (let’s be friends @_thepinkchickadee), I shared that I recently went to meet and welcome the new-to-Washington, DC National Zoo giant panda duo: Bao Li and Qing Bao. While it was such an exciting experience to meet Washington, DC’s newest panda residents, it was also quite a memorable experience, too. This blog post is going to focus on guiding YOU through your own experience to meet Bao Li and Qing Bao! Check out this guide on visiting the National Zoo’s giant pandas.

Visiting the Washington National Zoo’s Pandas Guide

Since Bao Li and Qing Bao made their grand entrances in the nation’s capital, I have been fortunate enough to visit them not once but twice. The first time, I went solo in February 2025 during their first few weeks in Washington, DC and with my college best friends Hannah and Alanna when they came to visit in late March 2025 during the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Please note that my guide is based off of both of my experiences visiting the giant pandas at the National Zoo.

About + History of the National Zoo’s Pandas:

The National Zoo has been gifted a duo of giant pandas since February 1972 when former President Richard Nixon and First Lady Pat Nixon visited China. On their Presidential visit to China (which was a historical visit and moment in itself), First Lady Pat Nixon fondly described the pandas to Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai. In response to Mrs. Nixon, Premier Zhou Enlai gifted a duo of pandas to the United States for all to see and meet at the National Zoo in Washington, DC. And, on April 16, 1972, a notable giant panda day in history went down as the first-ever giant pandas duo Hsing-Hsing and Ling-Ling were introduced at the National Zoo. To this very day, the giant pandas at the National Zoo, while they bring so much love and joy to us all, are a symbolic reminder of the friendship between the United States and China.

Ways To Give Back:

If you LOVE pandas, then there are several ways to support them whether it be at the National Zoo or beyond. One of the best ways to support the National Zoo’s giant pandas, whether you visit or not, is to give back. There are a variety of ways to do so, including becoming a National Zoo member to support conservation efforts, Shop panda merch online, Give to a conservation fund, or visit the giant pandas at the National Zoo (a free way to show your support!). For more information on all of the ways to give back to support pandas, then look no further than here.

In addition to monetary support and visiting the pandas, the National Zoo also hosts various events throughout the year. Although no zoo animals are on display, every holiday season the National Zoo hosts its annual ZooLights where all proceeds from ticket purchases go towards animal conservation efforts. There are also other several events in addition to ZooLights that the National Zoo hosts where you can support conservation efforts throughout the year.

Getting There:

Street Address: 3001 Connecticut Avenue, Northwest

The National Zoo has a unique location in Washington, DC! It is located in the Woodley Park neighborhood just a few blocks away from the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan Metro Station on the Red Line. From major Metro stations such as Metro Center and Gallery Place, visitors can transfer to and from other Metro lines to the Red Line and take the Red Line train from Metro Center/Gallery Place towards Shady Grove. It is also worth noting that the National Zoo does have parking onsite at an additional cost for a flat rate of $30/vehicle. See more information on getting there here: https://nationalzoo.si.edu/visit/parking-directions

Admission:

The giant pandas have been at the National Zoo and loved by so many people since 1972. The Washington National Zoo is apart of the Smithsonian Institution – research institution and group of museums and institutions many of which are in Washington, DC lining the National Mall – meaning that it is FREE for all guests to visit. One thing to note about the National Zoo is that all visitors must reserve a timed-entry pass online in advance upon entering. All visitors will have to go through a security checkpoint and show their tickets upon entry. Click here to reserve a free entry pass by date.

My Experience:

Overall, getting to meet Bao Li and Qing Bao was a MAJOR treat (!!!!). The signage at the National Zoo to go meet the giant pandas is pretty well-marked and leads you amongst the crowds to go and welcome them. However, I will note that since many people are coming to see the pandas to be prepared for heavy crowds and some stand-still moments while waiting to see them. According to the signage at the National Zoo, giant pandas eat approximately 16 hours a day, which means that they will potentially be chilling inside adorably chomping on some bamboo. The giant pandas were, in fact, chomping on some bamboo when I went to see them. Hence, Bao Li and Qing Bao were in the indoors section eating, making it a bit confusing to go and see them. The indoors section of the giant pandas section is crowd controlled and it takes some walking to get there. Being fully transparent that there weren’t a bit of staff there to guide us, which made all of us in the crowd initially a bit confused. However, once I realized that I had made it to where the pandas were, my utter confusion went away and getting to meet Bao Li and Qing Bao was SOOO worth it all!!

Tips:

  • The last admittance into the National Zoo is 3pm in the Winter season and to see the giant pandas will be a bit earlier. The gates of the National Zoo’s entryways WILL close at 3pm during the Winter hours. Plan to arrive by 1-2pm at the latest. Be sure to look up the National Zoo’s hours and plan accordingly as they do vary per season.
  • Arrive as early as possible, as the crowds do get bigger the closer you get to 3pm. I left the National Zoo around 2pm and there was a big crowd of people and a line at the entryway. At that time, the National Zoo had also reached their capacity for the day of allowing visitors to come in if they did not reserve a timed-entry pass upon arrival. Those guests were turned away.
  • It may be confusing when it comes to where the pandas are at the time that you visit. Sometimes, the pandas are outside and sometimes they are inside. It can get rather confusing, but be patient and follow the crowds no matter how overwhelming they may get.
  • Be sure to reserve that free entry pass in advance! Chances are if you arrive early enough, you may be able to still reserve that entry pass at the security checkpoint, however, you may not be able to. It is worth noting that free entry passes are available all throughout the day of the date that you select it for.
  • Be ready for crowds and simply follow them to get to see the giant pandas. Yes, *even* if it is crowded and confusing and agonizing, you’ll get there. Don’t worry and wait it out!
  • To avoid the crowds, it is suggested to go in the morning on a weekend when doors open or on a weekday especially in the off-season. It is worth noting that Peak travel season such as the National Cherry Blossom Festival and Summer will bring in more crowds.

And, last but not least, be sure to check out the ADORABLE … Panda Cam! The Panda Cam is live daily from 7am-7pm and a pre-recorded version will be shared the 12 hours in between. Check it out here!

Wrap-Up:

The giant pandas at Washington, DC’s National Zoo are the only place where visitors can see giant pandas for free. That all makes visiting the National Zoo’s giant pandas such a privilege! Truly, the giant pandas bring me and the world so much joy and have a beautiful meaning behind them: friendship despite our differences in this ever-evolving world.

Summer Strolls – The Smithsonian Castle

One of the MANY buildings in Washington, DC that I simply cannot get over how incredible it is is *none other than* the Smithsonian Castle! Indeed, the Smithsonian Castle is a magnificent building and is one of the first places that I visited growing up with my parents time and time again in Washington, DC. Not only does this incredible place hold many memories of my own, but it also holds a vast history in Washington, DC and the United States as well as several memories of people from all across the globe.

Please note that this content is apart of my exploring the Washington, DC area series. For more information on planning your own trip to Washington DC (here), Northern Virginia (here), the Virginia Wine Country (here), Maryland (here), and beyond (here), please use the corresponding links for some recommendations and inspiration.

Note: Currently, the Smithsonian Castle is closed to visitors for a few-years of renovations and restorations. It closed its doors on February 1, 2023, but will re-open once complete. However, its adjacent Enid A. Haupt Garden (home to some of the iconic magnolia cherry blossom trees!) and outdoor grounds remain open to the public during visitor hours.

About: The Smithsonian Castle opened its doors to the public in 1855 and has witnessed centuries of American history. It is the first-ever Smithsonian Institution building and also played homage to the first Smithsonian exhibit that opened to the public! Its home is alongside the National Mall where many of the Smithsonian’s other museums (and national monuments!) are located, including the National Air and Space Museum, National Gallery of Art, and African American History Museum. Currently, the Smithsonian Castle serves as the central information center for the Smithsonian. While its doors are closed as of February 2023, the Smithsonian Castle’s charm still reigns in ALLL of its glory!

Growing up, I used to visit the Smithsonian Castle with my Dad and brother probably at least 3+ times during the course of my high school years. I would, then, visit it again with friends in both high school and college in the years that followed. Needless to say, over time, going through the doors of the Smithsonian Castle began to feel a bit old and annoying to me. However, as time went by, I grew to truly love this building more and more and more. When the #IfThenSheCan exhibit showcasing 3-D printed statues of women in STEM (here) were scattered all across the National Mall including at the Smithsonian Castle (which I visited!!!), I truly began to appreciate the importance and beauty of this building that I frequented in my teens. Now that the Smithsonian Castle’s doors are temporarily shut to the public, I cannot help but admire it even more so. That all being said, I cannot wait until its doors reopen again!

While on my photoshoot of the Smithsonian Castle, I couldn’t help but admire its architecture at EVERY turn! I started off entering in via the adjacent Enid A. Haupt garden aka a favorite spot of mine to visit during cherry blossom season for the magnolia cherry trees (!!!!!) to check out the stunning gardens during the summer time. It was an EXTREMELY hot and humid Washington, DC day, but yet a great one to admire the Smithsonian Castle grounds right in front of my very own eyes. I happened to embrace my Hydrangea Girl Summer (if you know, you know!!) and found a few hydrangea bushes, too! I ended up walking ALLLL around (well, most) of the Smithsonian Castle grounds and was just in awe at every turn.

The Smithsonian Castle is, indeed, an amazing structure on the National Mall. It is one that I hold near and dear to my heart! Truly, a special place to me and many others!!

Peak Bloom 2024

Flowers for Spring?!?! GROUNDBREAKING. On February 29, 2024, the Washington, DC area celebrated leap day with the announcement of the National Park Service’s Cherry Blossom Peak Bloom prediction for the upcoming Spring season. Peak bloom lasts approximately 7-10 days on a typical year. HOWEVER, little did we allll know, peak bloom lasted around 2 WEEKS (!!!!). Rarely does peak bloom happen for ~2 weeks and it was such an exciting time in the Washington, DC area. While the National Cherry Blossom Festival ended in Washington, DC on April 14 for 2024, the excitement of Spring and the blooms everywhere is still in the air!

Personally, I never like to travel extensively during peak bloom/the National Cherry Blossom Festival, as it is such an EXCITING time of year here in my hometown. My best friends Haley and Shivani and I visited the blooms on the Tidal Basin this 2024 year AND have made it a tradition to do so in the future! Shivani and I went to see the cherry blossoms in 2022 (here) AND my influencer bestie Lindsay came with me last year (here). Also in 2022, Shivani and I attended the National Cherry Blossom Festival’s free opening ceremony at Warner Theater which was a CORE memory for us. Needless to say, cherry blossom peak bloom does nothing short of igniting incredible traditions and memories for me and my loved ones right in our own backyards.

Since the well-known beloved hollow cherry tree “Stumpy” is to be cut down as apart of a Tidal Basin restoration project, both Shivani and Haley and I on our two separate occasions to the Tidal Basin *HAD* to go pay him our respects. Stumpy is located just past the Tidal Basin further away from the Washington Monument and entrance to the Tidal Basin via coming in from the Smithsonian and Metro. We walked allll the way through and past the Jefferson Memorial – something that I had yet to do when visiting the Tidal Basin at peak bloom. I am someone who gets SOOOO triggered by crowds, however, over time, I have realized that seeing the cherry blossoms with all of their peak bloom glory is worth waiting in a packed group of people to see them. There is simply SO MUCH beauty in seeing the cherry blossoms in peak bloom alongside ALLL of the iconic Washington, DC monuments.

Washington Monument with Shivani

Tidal Basin with Shivani

Tidal Basin with Haley

The traditions made during peak bloom year after year are SO special. At the same time, I LOVE seeing ALLLL of the magic that is the National Cherry Blossom Festival here in my own backyard.

My Pre-Thanksgiving Weekend in Washington, DC!

Typically the weekend before Thanksgiving, ALL of the Christmas fun has typically begun in the Washington, DC area! And, as a Christmas enthusiast, I see that there is literally nothing better to do than simply enjoy ALL the holly jolly fun right in my own backyard. Ranging from hosting my first-ever Friendsgiving to visiting a Popup Christmas bar to a Christmas tree lighting and everything in between, I have enjoyed this past pre-Thanksgiving weekend essentially kicking off the holidays here in my city.

My best friend and fellow influencer Lindsay of @sunshineandstairclimbs on Instagram came to visit me over the weekend JUST IN TIME for Friendsgiving (!!!). We, then, did a bunch of activities around the city and went out to Bealton, Virginia for a winery day, too. I will note that although not everything is fully decorated and all things Christmas until around December 1, I am SO glad I got to show Lindsay a bit of Christmas in Washington, DC.

Friendsgiving

Friendsgiving was a bittersweet one, as I had to cancel my planned gathering last year due to burnout. SO, I am so so so thankful, grateful, and blessed to be able to not only host an incredible Friendsgiving this year but also have such incredible friendships here in the Washington, DC area. Many of my local friends were able to make it, too, which made it to be such an incredible and blessed gathering. Lindsay also got to meet all of my Washington, DC area friends and everyone there all became friends on social media and in real life (!!!!). One of the biggest gifts in my book is seeing my friends become friends with my other friends. I LOVE being a bridge to new and incredible friendships! Rosie my dog also joined in on the Friendsgiving fun, too, and brought us all SO MUCH JOY!

Downtown Holiday Market (Centered at 8th and F Streets NW, Washington DC)

Every year, Washington, DC’s Downtown Holiday Market brings Christmas cheer to the city pretty much daily now until December 23 from 12-8pm. Located just in front of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, the Downtown Holiday Market brings local Washington, DC area businesses to the forefront to showcase their goods and allow locals and visitors alike to support them. While I find the Downtown Holiday Market to be a bit overpriced (depending on the merchandise) at times, I do LOVE supporting 1-2 local small businesses each year and learning about many others in my city. Lindsay and I LOVED taking photos in front of the fun props such at candy canes and reindeer and stars for folks to pose in front of and enjoying *none other than* the holiday vibes at the Downtown Holiday Market. Live music is there, too! We were there right as the sun had set, which made for such a magical experience!

Urban Roast (916 G Street NW, Suite C-2, Washington DC)

Known as Washington, DC’s premier pop-up bar, Urban Roast has been ALLL decked out for Christmas since the beginning of November! I have LOVED dining at Urban Roast for the vibes and drinks but less for the food (which to be honest is subpar). However, the staff there are super kind and make it worthwhile to come back time and time again. The Christmas decorations at Urban Roast was probably my favorite that they’ve done, too! Being transparent, I reacted adversely to something in the environment at Urban Roast which will make me sit out going back there any time soon. BUT, I am ALL about enjoying the vibes at this incredible pop-up bar while you can!

Bull Run Festival of Lights (7700 Bull Run Drive, Centreville, VA)

I treated Papa and I to tickets at the Bull Run Festival of Lights and it was AMAZING. Every holiday season, the Bull Run Festival of Lights takes over Centreville’s Bull Run Regional Park with SO MUCH Christmas cheer. When I was a kid, my family and I used to pack the family van and all go and enjoy the lights at Bull Run, so it felt magical to be back! This time around, Papa and I ended up going on a rainy Tuesday night and took Rosie with us. The cutest thing is that Rosie was looking out the window at the lights, too! Needless to say, we all enjoyed ourselves and had a holly jolly time!!

Morais Vineyards & Winery (11409 Marsh Road, Bealton, VA)

My fellow best friend Stephanie posted about the Fall Festival that Morais Vineyards & Winery was having when Lindsay was coming to visit, SO, in typical Katie fashion, I made arrangements for us ALL to go! Morais Vineyards & Winery is located about an hour away from me and Stephanie both in Bealton, Virginia and about 90 minutes South of Washington, DC. Stephanie and I had checked out Morais Vineyards & Winery while at the Mount Vernon Wine Festival back in October (here) and knew we wanted to check out the gorgeous vineyard in-person at some point. Morais Vineyards & Winery also serves as a wedding venue playing homage to Portuguese architecture and wine with some tastes of its home in the Virginia Wine Country, too. It is a STUNNING place! We all enjoyed some wine and checking out the food trucks and small business booths at the Fall Festival.

Old Ebbitt Grill (675 15th Street NW, Washington DC)

Old Ebbitt Grill is probably one of my VERY favorite restaurants. I write more about this incredible restaurant and its historical significance in Washington, DC and the United States as a whole here. And, since the notable Nutcrackers appear outside the doors of the magical Old Ebbitt Grill EVERY holiday season, Lindsay and I *just knew* that it would be a must-go for us! While I go into much more details on Old Ebbitt Grill in my previously linked post, this well-known restaurant is a unique one in that it brings together tourists and locals, alike, and has a strong international presence with both its clientele and staff making it such a unique place to be!

Old Town Alexandria Christmas Tree Lighting (520 King Street, Alexandria, VA)

The Christmas tree lighting in Old Town Alexandria took place on Saturday November 17 with special guests such as Santa and his elves. The Christmas tree is located right in front of the gorgeously historic Alexandria Courthouse in the heart of Old Town Alexandria’s King Street. Lindsay and I shopped at local shops on King Street before admiring the gorgeously lit tree. I spend A LOT of time in Old Town Alexandria, as it is one of my happy happy happy places, so to see the Christmas tree there the night it was lit brought me SO MUCH JOY!

The Willard Intercontinental Hotel (1401 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington DC)

While not decked out for Christmas *just yet* (or at least when we went), the Willard Intercontinental Hotel is ALWAYS such a magical place to be. I took Lindsay here late on a Sunday night right after our dinner at Old Ebbitt Grill, as it is a few blocks away. This notable and iconic Washington, DC hotel has an iconic holiday tea at their in-house Peacock Alley and nightly carolers (something I want to check out this year!). More details on the holiday fun here. It was a such and brief visit for us both before the halls are decked out!

I have already found SO MUCH joy and things to be thankful for this holiday season. I have SO MUCH holiday fun to look forward to this season, and I hope you do too.

XOXO – Katie <3

DC Dining – Summer 2023

Summer 2023 has been one of my favorite summers in recent years. Summer 2020 there was the pandemic. Summer 2021 I felt mentally crushed being away from all of my college friends having just moved back to the Washington, DC area. And, Summer 2022 I was struggling a ton mentally. SO, Summer 2023 was such a treat for me. I travelled to South Carolina, Indiana, Illinois, North Carolina, Delaware, and took day trips to Maryland and West Virginia. In between it all, I spent many afternoons and evenings in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia and Washington, DC. Needless to say, many special memories were made both near and far this Summer 2023. At the same time, my Washington, DC area dining experiences were ALSO ones for the books, too!

This Summer, I tried some places that I LOVE going to from time to time and also some that I’ve been dying to try. It was a GREAT highlight of a GREAT Summer for me. I feel beyond lucky to have friends and family that I love and are happily willing to try such incredible restaurants with me. In case you didn’t know, the Washington, DC foodie scene is BOOMING. There are SOOOO many delicious places to dine at in and around the Washington, DC area yet SO little time!

The Bazaar by Jose Andres (1100 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC)

With its setting inside the iconic Waldorf Astoria in Washington, DC, Bazaar is truly in the most majestic setting which draws its inspiration from the hotel’s origins as DC’s General Post Office until 1914. Bazaar is the workings of a 30-year dream by its iconic Chef Jose Andres and it serves up unique Americana-inspired dishes. The Bazaar was truly one of THE MOST magical restaurants I have *ever* stepped foot in – I was seriously IN AWE the moment that I walked into the restaurant with its glorious avant-garde and Americana flair.

My best friend Briana and I decided to make a girl’s night out on the town via dinner at The Bazaar and *of course* photos admiring the gorgeous lobby of the Waldorf Astoria. While we LOVED the entire atmosphere of the restaurant, we found the food to be unique yet overpriced for its tiny portions. The charcuterie and oysters with a fizz on the top and drinks were extremely well-done, I would not see myself going again for anything more than a nice glass of wine or a cocktail and a snack. I would LOVE to bring some of my best friends from Indiana and North Carolina to The Bazaar when they come to visit and *even* climb to the top of the Old Post Office Tower, which also calls the Waldorf Astoria its home and is FREE for all.

Tip: Make a reservation at least 4 weeks in advance, as tables fill up FAST.

Bellissimo Restaurant (10403 Main Street, Fairfax, VA)

My best friend Stephanie and I tried Bellissimo Restaurant, located in Old Town Fairfax, Virginia (here), as apart of Summer 2023 Washington, DC Restaurant Week. We tried their 3-course $40 menu with a glass of house wine for an additional $10. Bellissimo is a tiny yet extremely elegant and homey Italian restaurant that has been owned by the same man for over 20 years. Stephanie and I got to meet the owner and he was so kind alongside the rest of the staff! Let’s just say that the menu was also TO DIE FOR good and I was BLOWN AWAY (!!!!) by the food. I started with their caprese tower, enjoyed their lobster bisque and crab and shrimp ravioli, and then finished off with their cheesecake to go alongside some Pinot Grigio. Stephanie and I enjoyed a nice time catching up before heading back home via enjoying an extraordinary sunset that was ALL across the Washington, DC area at the end of August.

Tip: Make a reservation *even* on a weeknight as the restaurant is small to guarantee seating.

Virginia’s Darling (277 S Washington Street, Alexandria, VA)

I first visited Virginia’s Darling in November of 2022 (here) and was blown away by the gorgeous atmosphere and delicious food and *just knew* that I needed to make another visit back! SO, when I had a free Thursday night, I decided to head on over to Old Town Alexandria and enjoy Virginia’s Darling’s Happy Hour and some pasta. I had a delicious blackberry summer spritz and a unique pesto gnocchi! Needless to say, Virginia’s Darling’s vibes and decoration were just as great if not BETTER than I remember!

Ada’s on the River (3 Pioneer Mill Way, Alexandria, VA)

If you know me in real life or on Instagram (follow me @_thepinkchickadee), then you know that I LOVE spending my weekends at home in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia! In the recent Summer months, my Papa, Aunt Amy, and I have been dining out in this gorgeous Potomac Riverfront town as apart of our monthly dinners/brunches together. For June, we decided to do brunch at Ada’s on the River – an Old Town Alexandria restaurant boasting gorgeous panoramic views of the Potomac River. Ada’s is named after and inspired by Ada Lovelace aka one of the greatest mathematicians, pioneers of coding, and women in STEM of the 19th century. When looking on Ada’s website, I learned that this waterfront restaurant was built around a custom wood-burning oven – HOW COOL! Papa, Aunt Amy, and I enjoyed cocktails and brunch fares while admiring both the interiors and exteriors of Ada’s. Overall, we had a GREAT time together and LOVED being so close to the waterfront!

Trattoria Villagio (7145 Main Street, Clifton, VA)

Located in the Clifton Historic District on Main Street, Trattoria Villagio combines the vibes of an elegant Roman Trattoria with the hustle and bustle of an Italian train station. Growing up, I used to enjoy dinners at Trattoria Villagio with both of my parents and have several great memories. SO, Papa and I decided to take a trip down memory lane and dine here *yet again*. Let’s just say that Papa and I were EXTREMELY impressed and blown away with our time and service here. We made a reservation *even* on a Monday night which was still pretty busy. The staff, ranging from our waiters to the hostesses were super kind and ensured that we had an incredible experience there. We happened to dine at Trattoria Villagio during their Monday Happy Hour special (aka my FAVORITE way to dine!!!!) of 1/2 priced wine bottles, so we *of course* enjoyed a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and some pasta. The best part?! Trattoria Villagio also sells carryout pizza for lunch and dinner, which Papa and I want to try at some point!

Barca Pier & Wine Bar (2 Pioneer Mill Way, Alexandria, VA)

When Papa, Aunt Amy, and I dined out at Ada’s on the River earlier in the summer, we *just knew* that we had to hit the nearby Barca Pier & Wine Bar next! Part of Barca is located LITERALLY on the Old Town Alexandria waterfront pier via covered seating, which makes for the perfect summer atmosphere. We ended up dining at Barca on a cloudy Sunday, which made for a nice and more peaceful experience. Barca serves food in a shareable, Spanish tapas style and also has some brunch delights and a delicious cocktail menu (I ordered the Sangria!). A fun fact about Barca is that they use my exact same serving ware from The Golden Rabbit (!!!), which was a nice coincidence. I LOVED getting to take in ALLLL of the views at Barca while enjoying incredible shareable Spanish tapas with Papa and Aunt Amy (we LOVED the scallops and butternut squash dip!).

Carlyle (4000 Campbell Ave, Arlington, VA)

I’ve ALWAYS found Carlyle to be a magical place! Located in the heart of Arlington’s Shirlington Village, Carlyle serves American fare while decked out in deco-esque decoration with a STUNNING bar. Carlyle is also apart of the Great American Restaurants (GAR) Washington, DC area-based chain like Jackson’s, Mike’s, Coastal Flats, and Ozzie’s that I also LOVE dining at as well. To me, Carlyle has always felt grand. A fun fact about Carlyle is that my Dad and Step Mom went on their first date here years ago. And, my Dad and Step Mom took me and my brother to Carlyle for dinner growing up. Needless to say, Carlyle is an extremely special place to me and my family. Papa and I LOVED getting to spend a Friday night at Carlyle, as it holds a special place in both of our hearts. We definitely want to dine at Carlyle again, too!

The Majestic (911 King Street, Alexandria, VA)

I knew that I wanted to dine at The Majestic since seeing its gorgeous sign on Old Town Alexandria’s King Street. Having been a fixture in Old Town Alexandria since 1932, The Majestic has a delicious menu, extensive drink list, stunning interior design, and great happy hour specials (which I want to come back for VERYYYY soon!!). I dined for a solo Saturday brunch in August and felt like royalty. The food and my summer spritz is TO DIE FOR good and the staff including the owner who regularly greets diners. The interior walls are lined with paintings, including those that are of Washington, DC area landmarks. I find the retro interiors to make The Majestic OH SO elegant and make you feel just as if you turned back in time to 1932.

Thompson Italian (1024 King Street, Alexandria, VA)

Having been given accolades by Washingtonian and Northern Virginia Magazine, New York City culinary-trained couple Gabe and Katherine Thompson opened Thompson Italian‘s first location in Falls Church, Virginia in 2019. In recent times, Thompson Italian opened its second restaurant in Old Town Alexandria’s King Street where my Papa and I dined in late August. Funny enough, my name is *also* Katherine Thompson, which made my desires to dine at Thompson Italian (beyond reading about it on just about every top restaurant magazine headline!!) that much stronger. When we came into the restaurant, the host was shocked that I was not the restaurant owner – LOL! – despite the fact that she doesn’t usually make reservations being an owner. Our time at Thompson Italian was great, as the staff was super kind (including our super sweet waiter Caesar!), approachable, and made our experience such a delight. We enjoyed a Monday special of $30 for any bowl of pasta and a glass of wine, where I got a corn, panko, and scallops pasta with a glass of Pinot Grigio – it was GLORIOUS (!!!). Thompson Italian is a popular restaurant spot and does get busy FAST, even on a Monday night, which shows how many Washington, DC area locals love this place, too. I WILL be back with others again soon, as I’d LOVE to try dessert and a martini there in the future!

The Bullpen (1201 Half Street SE, Washington, DC)

I came The Bullpen briefly before a Washington Nationals baseball game, as apart of a company-wide networking event at the baseball game where some of my coworkers and I met up for drinks before hitting the ballpark. Located right by Nationals Park, The Bullpen is known for its live music, drinks, and baseball. My coworkers and I ALL got the “Barbie” aka pink colored cocktails while networking with one another and our other coworkers. The funniest part was that one of the guys in the band playing live music while we were all there happened to also work at our company, too – WHAT A SMALL WORLD! Needless to say, I had a GREAT time catching up with my coworkers, many of which I hadn’t seen for quite some time.

Spartans Family Restaurant (9542 Burke Road, Burke, VA)

The moment I step foot in Spartans, I immediately feel right at home. Its heritage truly shows how Spartans strives to make everyone feel welcome and at home as they walk through the restaurant’s doors. Spartans Family Restaurant was founded by Chris and Xenia Sarantis in January 1995 in Burke, Virginia. The couple truly believed they could make their dreams a lasting reality within the Northern Virginia community through their beliefs of hard work and value in customer service and even expanded to open a second restaurant – Olympians Family Restaurant – in Alexandria, Virginia. Spartans serves the most delicious Greek, Italian, Mediterranean, and American fare and there is ALWAYS something on the menu for everyone that comes to dine.

Papa and I regularly come to Spartans Family Restaurant and find that the same sweet and extremely kind staff are there and excited to see us (along with many of their other frequent diners!). Each time Papa and I come, we both get salad and their French Onion soup, which is THE BEST! I ALWAYS look forward to dining at Spartans, as there’s such a cozy, welcoming, and magical feel whenever I go.

Del Mar Restaurant (791 Wharf Street SW, Washington, DC)

In early August, my best friend Shivani and I met up for dinner in Washington, DC’s gorgeous area known as The Wharf. And, we happened to walk by Del Mar and simply pop in. I will say, in the moment, I had ZERO expectations of what to expect, however, I am SO glad we stumbled upon this incredible restaurant. Del Mar is a Spanish seafood restaurant on the waterfront by Fabio Trabocchi. The atmosphere is STUNNING and truly goes off of its Spanish-style and seafood cuisine. Shivani recently graduated with her Master’s and we happened to share that with the waiters who brought us complimentary champagne and made us both feel SO special. The manager came to bring us dessert champagne and cake, too – something that Shivani deserves more than anyone else I know. But, while there, I also enjoyed a summer spritz (surprise!) and octopus. Del Mar is definitely a special place in my heart and I hope to dine here again with Shivani and/or someone else very soon!

The Tasting Room (1602 King Street #200, Alexandria, VA)

Located in the Lorien Hotel & Spa on Old Town Alexandria’s King Street, The Tasting Room Restaurant proudly offers authentic European cuisines with an American twist. Offering everything from charcuterie, flatbreads, sandwiches, desserts (I ordered the delicious warm cheesecake topped with vanilla-sugared berries!!) food-wise alongside an array of specialty cocktails, beers, and wines, The Tasting Room offers it all at a much more affordable rate than other restaurants in the Washington, DC area. Personally, I LOVED getting to enjoy the small and cozy yet opulent restaurant atmosphere here without worrying about spending a fortune to have a good time on the town (if you know, you know!). And, if you plan on staying at the stunning Lorien Hotel & Spa (somewhere that I want to go for a staycation!!), then depending on when you book, you may get a restaurant credit, too.

On an August weeknight evening that I had free, I decided to get out of the house and head to Old Town Alexandria to check out some of the many fun Happy Hour spots! While I missed the Happy Hour window (which usually ends at 6 or 7 on weeknights at most places), I did snag a seat at the gorgeous bar which was empty when I arrived. I LOVED getting to have the entire bar at The Tasting Room to myself, too. It has been on my bucket list to enjoy a gorgeous bar to myself on a weeknight after a long work day, and I am SO glad that I got to.

Tip: Be mindful that The Tasting Room does not accept any reservations. Walk-in’s only, so plan accordingly.

Here’s to making MANY more Washington, DC area dining memories this Fall and beyond!!

XOXO – Katie <3
