Blandy Experimental Farm and State Arboretum of Virginia Guide

Since relocating back to the Washington, DC area, I have found myself exploring some of the many gorgeous nearby-to-me parks (here), however, I rarely make it out to the Shenandoah Valley near and in the mountains. However, that recently changed! In early May, I was introduced to a brand-new spot in Virginia: the Blandy Experimental Farm and State Arboretum of Virginia. This spot wasn’t on my radar or even a place I’d even heard of until we went for Mother’s Day! And, I  was in awe at how incredible this magnificent and unique spot is.

Blandy Experimental Farm and State Arboretum of Virginia Guide

About Blandy Experimental Farm and State Arboretum of Virginia

Operated by the University of Virginia, Blandy Experimental Farm and State Arboretum of Virginia is a field station that homes 700+ acres of local flora and fauna. With its beautiful location in Northern Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley in Clarke County, Virginia, it provides visitors with an active representation of Virginia’s local habitats (specifically within the Shenandoah Valley). Visitors have opportunities to enjoy bird watching, admire local and native plants (including embarking on the Virginia Native Plant Trail which is lovely in the Spring/Summer timeframe!), and *even* learn more and see local bee hives in action. One of the best ways to truly immerse yourself within the local Virginia flora and enjoy is to hike the 2.6-mile Wilkins Lane Loop Drive. The common denominator of this beautiful Northern Virginia spot is the gorgeous Shenandoah Mountains as a backdrop!

It is also worth noting that the Blandy Experimental Farm and State Arboretum of Virginia hosts numerous events throughout the year, including their Annual Garden Fair which took place on Mother’s Day in 2025 (which brought us there!). See their full events calendar here.

Getting There

The easiest way to reach Blandy Experimental Farm and State Arboretum of Virginia is to drive (there are several rental car options if needed!). It is located about an hour outside of Washington, DC and offers an incredible scenic escape from the hustle and bustle. Alongside Washington, DC, this beautiful Northern Virginia spot is also in close proximity to nearby towns of Leesburg, Virginia and Winchester, Virginia. It is worth noting that the main entrance is located on Route 50/17, making it an easily accessible spot from much of Northern Virginia.

Address: 400 Blandy Farm Lane, Boyce, VA 22620

My Experience

For Mother’s Day 2025, my Mom a mega native plant enthusiast was really excited to check out the Annual Garden Fair. So, we kicked off our experience by checking out the several incredible local vendors onsite for the Garden Fair before heading off to explore all that this beautiful spot in the Shenandoah Valley has to offer. My Uncle James and Step Dad joined us for the Mother’s Day experience, which consisted of hiking the 2.6-mile Wilkins Lane Loop Drive and strolling the Virginia Native Plant Trail. My Uncle James has been to the Blandy Experimental Farm and State Arboretum of Virginia many times and showed us all around this beautiful spot. During our hike, we learned about the native bees and saw a community of native bees! We also took in all of the gorgeous mountainside views and truly enjoyed our time being one with nature. Above all else, it was such a lovely time and I took several photos of this stunning spot at every chance I could!

There is a beautiful garden house onsite!
A commune of native bees!
There were plaques on almost every tree to learn more about it!
Virginia has native cacti!

All in all, we had a lovely and educational time!!

Wrap-Up

Personally, I had never heard of the Blandy Experimental Farm and State Arboretum of Virginia until my Mom and Uncle James showed it to me. Indeed, I am glad that they did! This is a beautiful and unique spot to learn more about Virginia’s local native habitats and admire some stunning landscapes. Nevertheless, we had such a lovely time this year that we decided to make visiting an annual tradition!

4 Things To Do in Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Recently on my road trip to Charlotte, North Carolina (here) to visit my friends there, I made a pit stop in charming Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Although I only spent ~2 hours in this North Carolina college town, I loved my time here and am excited to take another pit stop in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. That all being said, this blog post is going to be dedicated to things to do in Chapel Hill and will potentially be updated over time.

For more United States travel inspiration, check out my Exploring 50 States expedition page.

About Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Chapel Hill is a charming town situated approximately 30 minutes West of Raleigh in North Carolina’s Orange County. It is a part of North Carolina’s Research Triangle, which includes Raleigh and Durham as well. Most notably, Chapel Hill is home to the University of North Carolina – one of many colleges in the Research Triangle. Its well-known and bustling street, Franklin Street, boasts a wide array of cafes, shops, restaurants, and hotels. One thing to note about Chapel Hill is that everything is Carolina Blue aka University of North Carolina’s well-known college color!

4 Things To Do in Chapel Hill, North Carolina

1 – Stroll University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Campus

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a beautiful campus. Boasting everything from beautiful Southern style churches to gorgeous gardens and most notably the Old Well topped off in Carolina Blue, the University of North Carolina truly has so much to admire with a simple stroll on campus. You’ll definitely want to snap some photos, too!

2 – Grab breakfast and coffee at Chapel Hill’s oldest cafe: Carolina Coffee Shop

Become immersed into Chapel Hill’s history and food scene by dining at a cafe serving students for over a century. A cozy cafe that’s been situated right by the University of North Carolina’s campus since 1922, Carolina Coffee Shop is well-known for delicious breakfast eats, coffees, cocktails, and lunch foods.

3 – Admire the lobby and grab a drink at The Carolina Inn

Recognized as a AAA Four Diamond Award Hotel, The Carolina Inn is a luxurious hotel located a few blocks away from Franklin Street and adjacent to campus. The lobby, alleys, and hallways at The Carolina Inn are literally a grand millennial’s DREAM COME TRUE and also pay tribute to the history and heritage of its home at the University of North Carolina’s campus. While at The Carolina Inn, be sure to grab a drink or a delicious bite to eat at the onsite restaurant: Crossroads Chapel Hill which has a bar with signature wines.

4 – Walk along Franklin Street

Check out all of the local businesses and *even* spot one of the town’s iconic alley way’s murals alongside Franklin Street. While I didn’t spend too much time inside the shops, one thing that I wasn’t sure to miss and know you won’t miss too is ALL of the Carolina Blue and University of North Carolina pride at every turn that is beautiful to take all in!

Wrap-Up

I adored my brief pit stop and time in Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill is a beautiful college town filled with so much pride and heritage tied to its home university: The University of North Carolina. That college pride town-wide is such a beautiful thing to see and made me proud to be there, too.

TIL next time, Chapel Hill!

The Life of Katie!

A lovely Mother’s Day outing to Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley (here), a newfound love and obsession with reading, a few spontaneous solo outings, and lots of self care and home organization, the Life of Katie has been a bit unplugged to kick off the month of May. I cannot tell y’all how many unread messages and DMs I have had over the last few weeks – thanks for understanding, y’all!! I firmly believe that I have been in a self care era to kick off the month of May.

The Life of Katie!

  • A Newfound love of reading – For my 26th Birthday, my Papa graciously gifted me a Kindle and it has been one of THE BEST gifts I’ve ever received. I have found myself falling *in love* with reading and enjoying so many good reads. And, stay tuned: I plan to share what I’ve read with YOU in future blog posts!
  • Mother’s Day in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley – My Mom is a big gardener and loves visiting local native plant markets across the Northern Virginia region. SO, to make my Mom feel special, we took her out to a native plant market at Blandy Experimental Farm State Arboretum of Virginia in Boyce, Virginia. We ended up checking out the awesome market and purchased *just* a few plants while at it (I also grabbed some coffee at Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee Truck based in Vienna, West Virginia!) before going on a gorgeous hike around the arboretum grounds. My Uncle James knows A LOT about the Blandy Experimental Arboretum of Virginia’s grounds and trails and took us on a lovely adventure to see it all. Stay tuned for an upcoming blog post!
  • Self Care – Recently, I have been feeling *very* burned out and just needed time to devote to simply refilling my cup. I went on a recent solo Saturday excursion to one of my favorite wineries: Three Fox Vineyards (see my full review here). I also spent a lovely afternoon at Washington, DC’s Renwick Gallery with a pit stop at my favorite Washington, DC cafe: Tatte! At the same time, I have enjoyed a lovely weekend with literally no plans and simply slept wayyyy too much and couch surfed. Needless to say, I am grateful, thankful, and blessed for the time to just recharge and relax.

Above all else, I am SOOOOOOO grateful for the time I’ve devoted to simply caring for me and refilling my cup while at the same time allowing for spontaneity via solo dates (as well as a once in a year McDonald’s McFlurry run!!). This Summer 2025 will be a busy one filled with travels, time with friends and family, and simply enjoying my favorite season before the weather gets cooler. Simply stating, I am so excited to take the time to enjoy the moments ahead.

My 26th Birthday Brunch Tablescape!

For my 26th Birthday, I wanted to celebrate with friends in a way that brought us together and didn’t compel us all to spend a ton of money (and gas/Metro worries!) on an experience dining out together. Given my newfound passion and 2025 goal of hosting more at home, I opted to host a simple 26th Birthday Brunch at my apartment with an elaborate tablescape to celebrate. That way, my love for hosting and bringing people together worry-free and *of course* celebrating another trip around the sun was the reason for us all coming together. Overall, my 26th Birthday Brunch was a lovely time that my friends and I all spent together and I am so grateful that I decided to host my celebratory occasion with friends within the comfort of my own home!

At the same time, I want to mention that so many people choose to celebrate their Birthdays with friends, whether it be on a trip, dinner/brunch on the town, or a unique experience such as Tea on the Town (see more on my friend Briana’s Birthday experience there and my fully transparent review on the experience here). Just know that whatever you choose to do for your birthday should be right for you, however that may look.

While I won’t spend too much time sharing much about the menu for my 26th Birthday Brunch (and hence don’t have any photos of the food either – LOLLL!), I will share a few details of what I chose. I opted to go for a simple menu that required less preparation on anyone’s parts. I had two celebratory dinners on the town with family members and was a bit tired from those late nights with 9-5 work days and wanted something on the simpler side. For the menu, I went with a nice bagel display with plain and everything bagels as well as plain and strawberry cream cheeses to choose from alongside a blueberry and cantaloupe with a few sprinkles of fresh mint fruit salad. For drinks, I had coffee/tea, Mimosas (alongside orange juice only for those who don’t drink), and water to keep us all hydrated. For dessert, we had Georgetown Cupcake which was my biggest splurge! I pick up a dozen Georgetown Cupcakes every year for my Birthday in lieu of a cake and have found it to be the best and most special way to commemorate another trip around the sun.

& NOW for my tablescape details…

China – I used dinner plates that I *surprise* normally use around my house for meals and dressed them up with bread plates, and tea cup/saucers that are from my Great-Grandmother, Nana Martha Seaton’s, China collection! I inherited my Nana Martha Seaton’s China collection a few years ago and am proud to have currently used and will continue to use her gorgeous collection for years and generations to come.

Water Cups – My water cups are from Kate Spade and I’ve had them for a few years via a FabFitFun box when I was a member.

Wine Flutes – For a table of 6, I opted to mix and match given what I have! For the wine flutes on the sides, I used my newly purchased Kate Spade X Target wine flutes that happen to be plastic and are SO FUN! As for the heads of the table, I used my gold wine flutes that I got earlier this year at Target and regularly use for lazy wine nights/dinners in.

Tablecloths and Napkins – I have been on THE HUNT for some elegant cloth napkins for hosting! When the Kate Spade X Target collection launched, I snagged some of the 4-pack cloth napkins sets for hosting purposes. They are uniquely embroidered and ADORABLE!! I got the matching table runner from the Kate Spade X Target collection and paired it with an aqua sheer thrifted curtain that I repurposed as a tablecloth.

Party Poppers – I wanted to invest in something unique for my 26th Birthday Brunch Tablescape. I actually got these party poppers first when visioning for my tablescape! On an April solo date to my happy place aka Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, I popped into Boxwood – a gorgeous boutique on King Street focused on home and hosting goods – and happened to chat about my 26th Birthday Brunch with the lady working there (whose name I wish I remembered!). She graciously showed me a few things storefront to get my inspiration going to which these beautiful party poppers were then shown to me. I *knew* that they would be the perfect touch to my tablescape and am SO excited that I got them, after memories of using party poppers as a kid during the holidays. Needless to say, they were a hit at the table!!

Flowers – Last but not least, my Papa graciously gifted me a bouquet of flowers that coincidentally paired SO well with my tablescape. I put them in my Lilly Pulitzer-inspired painted vase that I thrifted from Goodwill a couple of years ago for the perfect finishing tablescape touch.

Travel Diary: Natural Bridge State Park, Virginia

Ever since I was like 10, I had always wanted to visit Virginia’s Natural Bridge State Park. However, I had never made it out there for almost two decades. Well, until I was on my way home from a road trip to Charlotte, North Carolina and all of a sudden took an hour detour off of Route 29 immediately after seeing the exit sign for Natural Bridge. If you know me in real life pretty well, then you probably know that I am *very* much a planner through and through. I am rarely someone that takes a detour in the plans that I make let alone an hour+ detour, especially on a road trip when I feel anxious to get home. But, through it all, I am so so so happy that I simply took the detour and *finally* got to cross an incredible mega Virginia bucket list item off of my list!

One of my recent travel goals that I’ve briefly mentioned on my Instagram (let’s be friends @_thepinkchickadee) is to visit all 95 counties over the course of my lifetime in the state of Virginia alongside all 50 states and 50 countries. Travel is ONE of my biggest passions and loves of my life (in case you can’t tell!). I have fallen in love with driving throughout my trips to/from my college state of North Carolina and current residence in the Washington, DC area (by way of Northern Virginia!) and simply wanted to find a way to enjoy SO MUCH of the state that I proudly call home. Hence, my travel goal of visiting all 95 counties of Virginia was born!

Nevertheless, my travel goal of visiting all 95 counties of Virginia is one less county away from being complete, as I got to visit Natural Bridge State Park’s home in Rockbridge County, Virginia. At the same time, I also got to visit a mega bucket list item off of my list! While driving to Natural Bridge State Park’s location which is ~15 miles South of Lexington, Virginia, I got the chance to drive part of I-81 that is situated in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. The drive throughout I-81 was BEAUTIFUL, and I am excited to visit and explore more of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains – a part of my home state that I have yet to really explore. Natural Bridge was just the start of many more visits to this gorgeous Virginia region, including, more recently, to the Blandy Experimental Farm and State Arboretum of Virginia!

Know Before You Go

While I was LITERALLY in my Jack Roger’s sandals and a blouse and skirt as I went on a whim, I didn’t have any issues or regrets throughout my visit when it came to how I was dressed.

Parking: When routed to Natural Bridge State Park’s location (I typed in “Natural Bridge State Park” on Apple Maps), visitors will want to park at the Visitors Center located across the street from the charming Natural Bridge Hotel – owned by Wyndham – and will see a LOVE sign themed for the gorgeous state park! Parking is free and plentiful – welllll, at least on an April Monday. To reach Natural Bridge, I recommend entering through the Visitors Center and checking out some of their exhibits, the gift shop, and bathrooms (if needed).

Accessing Natural Bridge: Upon entering into the Visitors Center, I found it easiest to head downstairs and outside via following the signs to Natural Bridge that are easy to find throughout it. Visitors will head outside and walk a concrete trail filled with lots of stairs alongside a beautiful creek and gorgeous forest scenery to enjoy. The stairwell pathway leads to another gift shop, where guests must purchase an admission pass ($9/13+ and $6/6-12 and Free/under 6). Anddd, then visitors can be fully enamored with the gorgeous serenity and natural formation of Natural Bridge!

My Experience at Natural Bridge State Park, Virginia

While I didn’t spend a ton of time at Natural Bridge State Park given my attire, I did have a lovely time while I was there simply taking in the gorgeous views and enjoying this beautiful natural formation and creation. I adored the creek, river, and adjacent stream that are all nearby Natural Bridge. I also loved that just in front of Natural Bridge, there are several wooden chairs for visitors to take a seat and simply take it all in. However, if I did have more time to spare and the right attire, I would have loved to explore some of the many trails that Natural Bridge State Park has to offer and *even* go underneath this gorgeous bridge. Above all else, I love that the walk, while LOTS of stairs, is easy to navigate and not super challenging for most so that everyone can enjoy.

Wrap-Up:

After almost 2 decades of aspiring to visit Natural Bridge State Park, Virginia, I am filled with SO MUCH JOY and happiness that I finally got to. I am SO glad that I impulsively found myself off of the highway and on my way to Natural Bridge State Park within 30 seconds of seeing the exit sign to go. Sometimes, taking the detour is truly worth it and I am SO glad that I did just that. I am still so proud and happy that I went for me and me only.

What I’ve Been Eyeing Recently

J Crew Factory released some gorgeous new Summer arrivals at the end of April! As a fellow J Crew Factory lover (just like many of y’all!!), I am ALWAYS rounding up some of my favorite finds that I eye the most over on my LTK. That orange printed dress is CALLING my name! Shop it all here!

I found these gorgeous daisy heels from Target and immediately thought of my college years, as my college’s flower is the Daisy! At the same time, I have been LOVING many of Target’s new arrivals accessory wise and feel *very* tempted by a Rifle Paper Company x Target lamp – LOLLL! At the same time, I am always admiring many of the J Crew Factory dresses, including from their new Summer collection. Shop it all here!

In the midst of ALLL of the gorgeous Summer New Arrivals at J Crew Factory, I came across a rattan crossbody and tote that looked almost identical to the ones that I purchased last year from Target. This season, Target is not selling these rattan bags that I love and got last year. I LOVE both of these rattan bags that I own and am SOOOOO excited that J Crew Factory has a similar style of each this season. Shop it all here!

Azalea Season

A HUGE highlight for me throughout the April weeks is Azalea peeping in my *very own* backyard and around town. Needless to say, I snapped several photos of the gorgeous Azaleas that were gorgeously lining my backyard!

What I Wore To Work – April 2025

Nevertheless, April 2025 has been a good whirlwind of a work month! This past month, I have been working on refining my 2025 professionals goals (specifically for Q2-Q4) and feel very excited about where I am going. At the same time, I also have been striving to go into the office more on some of the more social days that my primarily remote working environment has within the office. I went into the office for the first time in 2025 and since May 2024 to work there and it was a lovely time. I am looking forward to more office days and striving to accomplish my Q2-Q4 2025 goals!

Moving forward when it comes to what I wore posts here on the blog, I will be linking each of my outfits to my Shop LTK platform where you can see where each piece has been purchased from. This change has been implemented based off of YOUR feedback for wanting to shop what I wear on a daily basis!

This month, I also wrote about incorporating Lilly Pulitzer into my workwear (here). Yes, it IS possible to wear Lilly Pulitzer at the office when styled accordingly. In fact, my go-to going to the office tote is a Lilly Pulitzer canvas tote (I think?) now retired Lilly Loves DC print! While I didn’t wear a ton of Lilly Pulitzer this past month, I do adore incorporating my favorite fashion brand into my work looks.

Chapter 26

Personally, it feels crazy to me that I am entering beyond my early 20’s and am not an extremely recent college graduate anymore. Time has truly flown!! 22-25 felt like a wild ride of figuring out what to do with my life both professionally and personally all while navigating adulthood for the very first time. As it’s been a few years in the world of adulting, I feel I finally have a grip on life in my 20’s and navigating the world and changes that come with it in all aspects of life. 26 feels like I’m entering into some new territory age-wise and I am excited to see what’s to come within this new chapter of life.

I graduated college (see my Senior photos here) in May 2021 in a sea of masks and social distancing. I left college and relocated back to the Washington, DC area feeling fortunate to have a full time offer that I was starting a few months after graduation. Grateful to have a Summer break before entering into the workforce to set up my apartment and settle into my new home and life, I also at the same time had no idea what I was doing. As someone who is super Type A and thrives off of the structure and knowing what was going to happen, I went … NUTS going into adulthood. At the same time that I was navigating purchasing my very own 401k and insurance through my company and car (here), little did I know that I would be navigating the changing friendship dynamics with long distance college friendships – some of which have strengthened and others of which have drifted away and even felt shut out from (here). I went from a world of structure and predictability to one of a lot of new experiences to navigate and confusion about where I was going.

In college, our end goal is to make it to graduation with a degree in-hand and hopefully a job offer, graduate school plans, etc. in tow. In the working world, our end goal is continuously changing and evolving. Anddddd, as someone who is always working towards an end goal and experienced so much stress and confusion over having no end goal in mind, I felt extremely uneasy going into the workforce and to know simply where I was going. However, I am very fortunate to have gotten a job at an incredible and supportive organization that I am still with today that has helped me navigate my career over the last few years. And, while my career goals have changed while at my employer, I finally feel that I have an end goal that I am excited to pursue over the next chapter of my life and career. This end goal of mine will taken quite a few years of accreditation, work experience, and education, however, I am looking forward to what is in store for me in 26 and beyond. In my first months within the workforce, one of the best pieces of advice I got from somebody that I really admire professionally was to simply “trust the process.” While a daunting and much easier said than done piece of advice, I have come to truly embrace and implement this piece of advice into my daily live, both professionally and personally.

Since moving back to the Washington, DC area, I have been lucky enough to rent out and room within my Papa’s basement and be close to him and our dog Rosie. We have gone on several adventures both near and far together whether it be to Maine, Canada, and Shenandoah National Park as well as North Carolina. I have also LOVED getting to make family memories close to home with my Papa and Rosie alongside our extended family. Over the years, I have had several close friends that I’m SOOOO lucky to have in my life come and visit me and get to know Papa and Rosie, too. Truly, living with Papa and Rosie has been a major blessing for me and is something I don’t plan to move out of anytime soon.

In terms of 25, I felt as if I personally entered into a quarter life crisis as the year began and left the year having essentially survived it. 25 was a year that I began to feel the weight of adulthood on me in soooo many ways. While I won’t really get into too many details here, I felt a lot of chaos and stress and uncertainty throughout the past year on the inside. While on the outside, I enjoyed sooooo many lovely moments in terms of experiences and travel. During 25, I visited Hawaii, Canada, Spain and Portugal, and New York City. I also celebrated 5 years as a blogger (here) and announced the group trip of my dreams (!!!!) to Italy next year in April 2026 (reserve your spot here). I also *finally* got to see Taylor Swift perform via The Eras Tour on her final tour leg in Canada. And, I discovered a passion of mine for community building here on this platform and photography. Although a pretty chaotic year, 25 definitely was one of the years that taught me the most moving forward into 26 and beyond.

As for now starting off 26, I honestly feel a lot more at peace and a greater sense of clarity about both where I am going physically and mentally. I feel grateful to have an extremely great support system, consisting of family and friends alongside LOTS of therapy. A support system goes a LOOOONGGG way. During 25, I have also returned to church (here) and have been leaning on my faith more so these days. Going back to the piece of advice that I’ve received when I first started working, I have also truly leaned into the idea that I must “trust the process.” If we don’t “trust the process,” we can’t move forward with peace and clarity. This snippet of advice has been one of the most groundbreaking things that has helped me to move forward aka my word of 2025 (here) from 25 into 26.

Having *finally* putting my trust into the process during 25, I feel grateful and more clear-headed going into 26. I have been through quite a journey since graduating college at 22 in 2021 and am grateful to be opening a new page in my own life’s book. Nevertheless, I am also excited to share Chapter 26 with YOU. Thank YOU for being here. Here’s to Chapter 26!!

XOXO – Katie <3
