Review: The Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers

Ever since I saw my influencer bestie Lindsay share about The Cake Bake Shop on Instagram (follow me @_thepinkchickadee), I knew that I needed to check this magical brunch spot when I visited Lindsay in Indiana (see our full experience here). Well, in today’s Cake Bake Shop review, I’ll show you why it is! Nevertheless, The Cake Bake Shop feels as if you are visiting Walt Disney World with the magic, the sparkle, and the generous hospitality. I did NOT want to leave this magnificent spot!!

My Experience:

Lindsay and I went to The Cake Bake Shop location in Carmel, Indiana, decked out in its HUNDREDS of whimsical Swarovski crystals, and it was such an AMAZING experience! The moment we walked through The Cake Bake Shop’s magical doors, I started screaming just as if I was a five-year old again in a candy store. The vibes, ambience, service, and magic at every turn makes this dining spot such an impeccable place to be. The best part?! Our waitress Lupe made my experience such a magnificent one for the books. Once we got seated, Lupe was extremely empowering and kind and made our visit such a wonderful one. Lindsay and I enjoyed lattes with The Cake Bake’s signature edible glitter in their gorgeous signature teacups, lemony Caesar salad’s, truffle fries (who know that they were a Midwest specialty?!), and lemon blueberry cake. At the end of our dining experience, Lupe allowed us to channel our inner little girl and make a wish amongst ALLL of the fairy dust. Lupe truly helped make our experience (and my first one ever!!!) such a special one!

The Cake Bake Shop also has a stunning bar, events spaces, and a gift shop where guests can order cakes and other pastries along with pastries a la carte. Not to mention, The Cake Bake Shop has STUNNING Swarovski crystal-decked out chandeliers and floral-covered trees to make you feel *just* as if you’re in a magical fairy land. Personally, I am not a Disney vacationer *confession*, yet I felt as if I was in my very own version of Disney World. The entire time I was there, I felt as if I was in a magical land – just like I was 5 and at Disney again for the first time-ever!

Wrap-Up:

Personally, I felt SO inspired to have an event of my own at The Cake Bake Shop, whether it be an Afternoon Tea with my best gals clad in our fascinators, a celebration of sorts, or to simply to enjoy bubbly at the opulent bar. While I don’t live near a Cake Bake location, I definitely plan to come back to Indianapolis and Indiana for that matter and go back *yet again*. The Cake Bake Shop looks SOOO magical at Christmas time, too, and for a little girl’s Birthday celebration (like the group of girls and their Mom’s at the table next to us!). I hope this Cake Bake Shop review inspired YOU to put a visit on your bucket list, too!! Whatever the occasion may be for me, I KNOW that The Cake Bake Shop will see me again!

An Afternoon in Charleston, South Carolina

The first time I went to Charleston (here), I immediately fell *in love* with this charming Southern city! While Charleston, South Carolina is heavily talked about and on my feed at least on the daily via the many amazing women that I follow on Instagram, I have also discovered the love and hype behind this incredible place. When my best friends Hannah, Alanna, and Bree and I all went to Isle of Palms, South Carolina for 5 days, we *just knew* that we needed to do an afternoon in Charleston, South Carolina.

To me, one of THE MOST magical parts of going to Charleston is the drive into Charleston via the iconic Ravenel Bridge which connects Charleston to its nearby suburb of Mount Pleasant over the Cooper River. My Aunt Frances told me feels as if she’s in her happy place when she drives on this iconic Charleston area bridge. And, well, driving into Charleston’s Historic District is such a treat, too. I feel just as if I were driving through Europe when I drive into historic downtown Charleston. The homes are SO colorful, detailed, and charming. Charleston’s Historic District reminds me of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia and Washington, DC’s neighborhood of Georgetown with the colorful and charming historical homes, YET it has such a Southern charm to it AND is surrounded by *none other than* palm trees (!!!). Let’s just say that our *very interesting* Uber driver and ride (probably THE MOST interesting Uber ride in my entire life – haha!) left me with utter joy and excitement as we arrived in the charming streets of downtown Charleston.

What We Did:

We started our afternoon in Charleston, South Carolina with brunch at Toast! All Day – a popular New York Times-ranked brunch spot. We met up with Hannah’s and Bree’s high school friends Abbie and Taylor who are such sweet ladies. I had never met Abbie or Taylor before in-person and they are such incredible women that I am glad I got to know a bit more over some brunch delights. I enjoyed a mimosa, a veggie egg scramble, home fries, and *of course* a biscuit and jam – when in Charleston (!!!). Our brunch was delicious and I am now craving it ALL again and again as I write this post – LOL!

Our next stop after brunch was the Charleston City Market, which was established in 1807 and lives at 188 Meeting Street. Brunch was just a few blocks away from Charleston City Market, making it the PERFECT next stop for us. We parted ways with Abbie and Taylor at the Charleston City Market, but it was a blast to talk around here. I mentioned it more in my Charleston Shopping Guide (here), too. After our Charleston City Market adventures, we all walked around some of the nearby souvenir shops where Alanna and I got asked if we were from *none other than* Georgia dressed in our Lilly Pulitzer outfits – LOL! – by someone from *of course* Washington, DC – HOW FUNNY!! And, we went on the rest of our Charleston adventures with Bree’s good friend Maxwell who was interning in Charleston for the summer and happened to be in the area when we were there for the day.

The day that we were in Charleston was HOT and HUMID. If you know me, then you know that I am not a big fan of the heat – LOL! So, needless to say, after like 2 hours outside I was literally OVER IT. However, when we met up with Maxwell and his summer roommate, we had a blast getting to see Charleston from someone whose a local and loves the city like its his own. Maxwell took us the scenic route through the gorgeous French Quarter, to the Pineapple Fountain, and then to Rainbow Row. We got SO many photos at both the Pineapple Fountain and at Rainbow Row. My favorite part was getting to dip my toes into the iconic Pineapple Fountain and escape from the brutal heat of late June in South Carolina! And, afterwards, we went to King Street the iconic shopping street of Charleston.

Wrap-Up:

I feel SO lucky to have gotten to enjoy some friend time with Hannah, Bree, Alanna, Abbie, Taylor, and Maxwell in one of my favorite cities. My heart is filled with SO MUCH gratitude for the friendships, both old and new, and memories made during our 5 hours in Charleston. Charleston is such a charming and incredible city that I am pleased to say that I will be taking my first solo trip to this December! I have a HUGE list of places that I want to visit in Charleston and am SO excited to cross some items off of that list, too. Ever since my first (and second!) trip to Charleston, I know that many more trips to Charleston are in my future!

A Few Professional + Blog Updates

I have ALWAYS been a goal-getter! Maybe it is because I am an Enneagram Type 3 (if you know you know!) and THRIVE off of being productive and combatting every bullet point on my to do lists time and time again. Needless to say, June and July 2023 were BIG and EXCITING months for me. Both professionally and personally, I have been able to reach a few of my more bigger goals that I had established around the time I graduated college in 2021. This Fall 2023 season will be a busy busy busy yet excited time for me, and I cannot wait to see what all is in store for me moving forward.

Professionally-speaking, a reached a HUGE goal of mine within my 9-5 job that I have learned to LOVE over the past two years. I started my job back in late July of 2021 at the same company that I am lucky to be with now and don’t foresee myself leaving anytime soon. Over the past 2 years, I have tried my hand at a few different things, but have landed a great role on a healthcare-based contract that I LOVE and as a co-lead of my company’s Women in Data Community of Practice (COP) that I also LOVE. One of my biggest goals since January 2022 was to become a task lead for a specialty area within a contract that I was working on. And, I am pleased to say that as of late July 2022, my goal was ACHIEVED (!!!!) as I was able to transition to task lead and subject-matter expert (SME) for a 3-person team on my current healthcare-based project part time while also serving as a SME for another 7-person team on the same contract. I am extremely proud of myself for reaching this major career milestone of mine that I have been working towards for the past 18 months.

If there is one thing I have learned since starting my career is that careers are not like going to high school where you’re starting at the bottom and within 3 years you’re on top of the world essentially ruling the school. Career progression is A LOT slower than progression within one’s high school and college years. Careers take much longer than in high school or college to progress and *even* decide the direction you want to take. And, careers are decades-long experiences for many of us, as opposed to the standard 4 years of high school/college. Careers are unique to each of us, too, and the directions that we may choose to take. For myself, I want to take the leadership route with my career. Leadership is one of my biggest passions that I am blessed to have gained during my college years. One of my favorite leadership roles in college was being the President of the Canaday Math & Computer Science Club! And, well, my passion for leadership via the support of my employer (which I am SOOOO grateful for!!) has allowed me to apply for and get accepted into … the Ignite Young Professionals Class of 2024 cohort via the Leadership Center for Excellence in Arlington, Virginia. The Ignite Young Professionals Program’s purpose is “to expose participants to skills, ideas, and established area leaders, offer a space to explore personal and professional leadership development, and catapult emerging leaders into situations that create value and impact” (here). The other day, I took the DISC Management profile assessment as apart of preparation for Ignite Young Professionals AND let’s just say that I am VERY excited for the program to begin in October (!!). And, in late July, I networked with a cohort classmate in Old Town Alexandria which was a great opportunity to connect pre-program. In addition to Ignite Young Professionals, I will also be getting a human-centered design certification via a company-hosted course in October-November. I have been REALLY excited to take human-centered design and would’ve done it sooner if it weren’t for a busy spring/summer project season. Needless to say, I am really excited to grow and develop both personally and professionally and am extremely grateful for those in my network who helped me to get there!

While I won’t share much now, on the professional end of things, I have been working on figuring out a way to achieve a longer-term goal of mine. And, I am SO excited to say that within the last few weeks, the start of that goal is starting to come into itself. This goal of mine, even though I won’t say what it is now or anytime soon, is a big goal of mine that I know will set me up for success moving forward. Alongside this goal, one of another HUGE goals of mine that I will mention is to get my Masters in Business Administration (MBA). Ever since I was in my undergraduate years at Meredith College, I knew that I wanted to go to business school and get an MBA. The other day, I had my first discussion to learn about an MBA program and begin to decide which program and which program format may be the best fit for me. It is a REALLY exciting process, nevertheless, that leaves me feeling nothing but excited (and a *bit* overwhelmed!) for what’s all to come.

NOW, having reached two career milestones within the past 2 months, I have *surprise* become more and more busy in my professional life. I LOVE being busy professionally and for me that means scaling back on my travels via traveling less but for longer periods when work is less busy and enjoying more things locally, prioritizing self care more so, and ensuring that I meet ALL of my deadlines. I get a ton of fulfillment from professional development, and while I am adapting to it all now, I am also enjoying despite feeling a bit more overwhelmed than usual for the time being. SO, what does that all mean for the blog?! WELLLL, I have many many many blogging goals moving forward! I plan to post a bit less here on the blog aka this website, but be more intentional about it all. Moving forward, this platform will focus more so on things to do in the Washington, DC area, whether it be restaurants, cafes, bars, activities, day trips, and shops. I will ALSO be sharing tons and tons of travel content when I do travel, too. And, *of course* home decor, fashion (including my monthly work outfits of the day round-up’s!), and some hosting content in between will be shared, on occasion. My main focus has been finding fun things to do and sharing them with others while adding a sprinkle of confetti and pink wherever I go – The Pink Chickadee style!

I am ALSO please to say … that some of my BIGGEST goals in the blogging world of things are coming into fruition! While I will not say A TON at the moment, I will mention that I am extremely excited for what the future holds for me and my incredible platform that I am happy that YOU are a part of.

I have been dreaming up some BIG goals in both my blogging and professional worlds. I have always been someone who is a proud “hustler”, while also enjoying and emphasizing the importance of a work-life balance. AND, I am beyond excited to see lots of my hard work begin to pay off. Here’s to an exciting and fun, yet busy Fall season!!

The Life of Katie – July 2023

July 2023 was a super fun-filled and special month for me. While filled with many high’s, there were also a few low’s. I have achieved some major goals of mine professionally (more to share in a future blog post!), spent LOTS of time with those I love both near and far, and *of course* made tons of memories along the way. As always, I LOVE providing y’all with a snapshot of my month-to-month life in the Washington, DC area and beyond.

Enjoy!!

Highs:

  • To kick off the month of July, my family and I enjoyed fireworks at the nearby Lorton Workhouse Arts Center. We enjoyed a picnic dinner courtesy of Papa and KFC, some wine, and simply chatting with one another. I was also able to network with some of my Mom’s family friends and see my good friends Wyatt and Laurie. Needless to say, I LOVED getting to catch up with some family and friends of mine who happen to be local to me while enjoying a gorgeous fireworks show!
  • The day after the Lorton fireworks show, I went on a super fun half a day trip to gorgeous Annapolis, Maryland (about a hour away from my home base yet still in the Washington, DC area) to visit with my Uncle John, Aunt Frances, and cousins Jack and Laura. We got lunch together and then went out on my Uncle John’s sail boat via a tour along the gorgeous Annapolis Harbor. I learned A LOT about some of the many homes alongside the harbor and the downtown, including the Naval Academy (where my cousin Hugh is currently a Plebe on their sailing team *just* a hundred years later when my Great-Grandfather was a Plebe there in 1923 along with my Grandpa Bub and Great Uncle Charlie to follow as students there, too a few decades after 1923) and a home that was designed based off of George Mason’s Gunston Hall, which I share about my visit there here. My cousin Laura also showed me some super neat video footage of her tour to the top of the scaffolding of the Maryland State Capitol which she got to do as a perk of her job! At the same time, I enjoyed some GREAT family bonding time and learned a lot about sailing, including the races that my Uncle John and other family members/family friends occasionally do on Friday nights. I had such a special time with some of my Annapolis area-based family members, especially with ALL of the excitement leading up to July 4th!
  • The second weekend in July, I spent an evening with my best friend Haley exploring a bit of the gorgeous Washington, DC Dupont Circle neighborhood. I had visited Dupont Circle back in July 2022 as a plus-one for my best friend Bree’s happy hour when she was interning up in the Washington, DC area last summer. Back in July 2022, I LOVED how gorgeous the Dupont Circle neighborhood and *just knew* that I wanted to make a visit back there. We started our evening in Dupont Circle by sitting at the iconic fountain in the center of the actual Dupont Circle to enjoy our picnic dinners and people-watch. Haley and I went as apart of Dupont Circle’s First Friday’s art gallery walk program, where the local businesses open their doors up to the public to view their art galleries. However, we mainly went to the Dupont Circle Hotel to see the gorgeous paintings of the monuments which I saw ALLL over Instagram in my feed! We, then, strolled through the gorgeous neighborhood streets and checked out a few shops. Needless to say, I definitely want to come back to this stunning Washington, DC neighborhood *very soon*.
  • WE GOT THE TICKETS!!!! My friend Lorena and I booked floor tickets to … Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in none other than the fabulous city of Edinburgh, Scotland. I CANNOT wait to watch my favorite singer perform for the second time (first time on the 1989 tour in 2015) in one of my favorite cities that I visited while I studied abroad in college in London (!!!). Lorena and I have been monitoring StubHub like crazy (which I have been doing practically allll month long!) for tickets and then decided to take the plunge and GO! The concert is not until June 2024, so we got plenty of time to plan and brainstorm and save. BUT, I cannot help but get excited and start to read the Rick Steves’ Guidebook on Great Britain in the meantime.
  • I saw not one, but … TWO shows at The Kennedy Center in a whopping 6 DAYS!!! The first show I saw was The Lion King via Disney on Broadway on Tour with my friends, Brianna, Brittany, and their Mom. I, then, saw 1776 on Tour solo the following week. Needless to say, I had an amazing time at both shows (and *of course* wore Lilly Pulitzer dresses to both shows aka my #SummerInLilly moment!!!) and write more in detail about my fun times going to The Kennedy Center (I have another show to see in mid-August solo!) this Summer 2023.
  • Papa, Aunt Amy, and I went to Barca Pier and Wine Bar – a Spanish tapas and wine spot literally on a pier on the Old Town Alexandria waterfront. We had such a special time celebrating Aunt Amy’s Birthday and talking about our upcoming/already done summer travels, too. We have recently really enjoyed dining out in Old Town Alexandria, as it is super gorgeous alongside the waterfront and boasts lots of historic charm. And, two weeks later, I came back to Old Town Alexandria to dine at Vola’s Dockside Grill to network with someone in my professional cohort. I took my content creator and fellow queen of pink bestie Lindsay of @sunshineandstairclimbs on Instagram to Vola’s Dockside Grill when she came to visit me back in March .. we were blown away by the food and service, just as I was in late July! After my networking dinner, I enjoyed walking around and taking in the gorgeous evening atmosphere of Old Town Alexandria’s main street – King Street. I browsed shops, grabbed a strawberry lemonade at Lily’s Chocolate & Coffee, and took in the gorgeous views at Alexandria City Hall.
  • My best friend Sarah and I saw *none other than* the Barbie movie at our local Regal. We both wore our Barbie shirts, got dressed in the cutest Lilly Pulitzer pink Barbie outfits, grabbed some popcorn and water, and we were in for an incredible TREAT. I LOVED every minute of the movie, especially America Ferrera’s character Gloria’s well-known speech and watching Margot Robbie crush it as “stereotypical Barbie”. The best part besides the movie?! Seeing everyone get all dressed up for the Barbie movie!
  • I attended 2 super fun networking events this July – Arlington Cares which was a celebration of volunteerism hosted by the Leadership Center for Excellence within the Arlington, Virginia community and a Nationals game via my company’s employee connect program. Arlington Cares was nothing short of inspiring, as I got to learn about some of the amazing work that people within my local community are doing to serve others and *of course* connect with others regarding volunteer opportunities. I left feeling nothing short of inspired and excited to pay it forward! The Nationals game was such a GREAT way to connect with others within my company, network, and just enjoy the vibes of the ballpark. My company’s Early Career Professionals group connected ahead of the game at The Bullpen in Washington, DC’s Navy Yard for live music and drinks before heading over together to the ballpark. Both before, during, and after the Nats game, I feel so much gratitude for both the people, the culture, and the work that I do within my organization.
  • At the end of the month, I got together with my good friends Anna, Haley, and Sarah for dinner at Maggiano’s. Sarah brought her boyfriend of a few months Louis to dinner, too! It was my first time meeting Louis and I am SO happy that I *finally* got to meet Sarah’s lucky man in-person. Just like Sarah, Louis is extremely kind, caring, and compassionate. At the same time, I really enjoyed getting to catch up with Haley and Anna who are both incredible friends of mine as well. We had a GREAT dinner, chats, and memories made.
  • My high school best guy friend Wyatt and I enjoyed a hang out together in Fairfax, Virginia’s popular and super fun Fairfax Corner. We started by browsing around the shops, including REI, The Nest Egg, and Arhaus along with its super fun murals and outdoor recreational areas for all. We, then, spent a good hour where I felt like royalty shopping at Becky’s Boutique – a woman-owned boutique – where I grabbed some goodies for work and play! The ladies at Becky’s Boutique are beyond kind, caring, and inclusive. They ensure that everyone that walks through their doors has an optimal shopping experience – something I admire. And, last but not least, Wyatt and I had dinner at PF Chang’s before heading back to my place for wine. I’m so grateful that I had some quality time with Wyatt!
  • Lidl finally opened near me in Lorton, Virginia! Lidl is an ultra-affordable grocery store selling quality items at bargain prices. While I don’t shop for groceries in-store as often anymore (I prefer to shop via Instacart!), I did enjoy shopping in-person at Lidl and stocking up on some grocery items. The Lorton Lidl is super nice, welcoming, and well-laid out. For my grocery shopping, I LOVED bringing my Scout Bags Baguette Market tote (my bag’s print is not in stock anymore) with me!
  • And, last but not least, I enjoyed an incredible long family weekend with my Dad’s side of the family in Bethany Beach, Delaware. We went to the beach aka my favorite Tower Beach (where I felt VERY in my Coastal Grandma Era!!), dined out multiple times every time with a spritz in-hand, all snuggled with my sister aka Dad’s Yorkie Ginger, and took a stroll along the Bethany Beach boardwalk. This July weekend was such a highlight for me – it was filled with TONS of laughter, fun, and many memories made. Stay tuned for a Delaware Beaches dining guide!

Lows:

  • With some exciting professional development things on the horizon comes lingering feelings of high stress. Overwhelming is the name of the game. With getting asked to transition into a task lead role coincidentally during one of the busier times of the year (yes, summer is the busy time of the year for my line of work!!!), it has been nothing short of stress. However, I have been practicing self care continuously all month long and have been prioritizing slowly but surely what feels like a laundry list of things to learn and accomplish. Needless to say, through all of the stress, I actually prefer when things are busier and thrive off of it, despite feeling more slammed than usual.
  • Earlier this month, I had to take a half day off of work thanks to none other than a good olde stomach bug taking me out via a frozen pizza. I ended up napping all afternoon… ugh. My friend Lorena called me as I was TAKEN OUT thanks to this stomach bug which is purely to showcase that the struggle is sometimes very very very real and that none of us are EVER alone.
  • I have felt LOTS of stress and other things this past month, due to different things going on that I haven’t shared and plan to keep private. Even with lots of stress, I have enjoyed the hustle and it has kept me going. The main reason I am sharing this is to highlight the importance of self care and the fact that nothing is as perfect as it may seem on the outside. ALL of us have highs and lows in life.

What I Wore to Work – July 2023

July 2023 kicked off with the July 4th holiday festivities and feeling SOOO refreshed after being on vacation in South Carolina for the latter part of June. Work-wise, I jumped right back in with a much clearer head post-vacation ready to take all that may come my way. Work-wise this year, July has been my busiest month to date (SUCH a surprise to many given that July is in the peak of Summer, yet Summer is my busy season at work!). At the same time, July 2023 has also been one of the most exciting months for me professionally. I have been fortunate enough to reach some of my biggest professional and also blogger goals and milestones this month. Needless to say, July 2023 and beyond are going to be VERY exciting for me both professionally and personally on this blog.

Since kicking off sharing my work outfits on this platform back in May (here), it has become nothing but a highlight of my working days for me to share what I wear. Before I shared my work outfits with y’all, ALL I wanted to do was go into the office every single day just so I could put on a cute outfit. However, on the same token, I have learned to LOVE the work from home life and its perks (something my company decided to allow employees to do moving forward) and find sharing my daily outfits with y’all to be my happy haven. The joy I get from sharing my outfit of the day on my Instagram stories (follow me on Instagram @_thepinkchickadee) and seeing others feel the joy from it too is such a gift for me. July 2023 was my second full month sharing my daily outfits and hopefully FAR from one of the last. I am grateful for the love I get both on social media and here on this website for sharing what I wear!

There is only ONE MORE MONTH of Summer 2023 which has flown by wayyyy too fast for many of us. Not going to lie over here, I am beyond ready for Spooky Season and Fall 2023. But, at the same time, I am enjoying styling Summer 2023 outfits for work and play while I can. In the Washington, DC area, school starts by August 30 for most students, which makes me really excited to see Fall kicking off (despite not going back to school any time soon!). Back to School/Fall fashion is SO fun to style, too, but for now, I am going to enjoy ~6-8 weeks of more Summer looks.
