Personally, I think that supporting local + small businesses in the city that I am visiting is one of the best ways to leave a lasting mark for myself and for local creatives. Washington, DC has SO many amazing small businesses to support when visiting! There are several popular Washington, DC gift shops and small businesses (see an excellent resource and business directory to several Washington, DC-area small businesses via DC Shop Small) that you can shop when visiting. Below, I have listed a few highlights for small businesses to support when in the nation’s capital.
- Shop Made in DC (multiple locations across Washington, DC) – Celebrates Washington, DC’s creative makers through selling a variety of DC-made goods, craft classes, events, and offers local shipping.
- Urban Dwell (1837 Columbia Road NW) – An independent, veteran-owned boutique gift shop selling unique hard-to-find gifts made both locally and internationally in the heart of the Adams Morgan neighborhood.
- Museum Gift Shops (at most museums) – Yes, we ALL love a good museum gift shop and Washington, DC’s museum’s gift shops definitely do not disappoint! Well-known museum gift shops include the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM)/National Portrait Gallery, and the National Air & Space Museum.
