5 Stylish + Comfortable Flats For Travel

It is Summer 2018 and you are about to board a plane to spend the next two months studying abroad in Europe ANDDDD you packed the WRONG shoes. Yep, that was ME for TWO WHOLE MONTHS in Europe. I had the WRONG shoes with me for walking 10,000+ steps a day across Europe. I remember during those long walking days feeling a lot of pain and annoyance and discomfort within my feet. At that time, I wasn’t aware of any stylish and comfortable flats for travel. However, flash forward to 2025, and I am in a VERY different place when it comes to traveling and the shoes that I wear! These days, I feel LOTS of comfort and a LOT less complaining when it comes to my feet. I am *very much* grateful to have found the right stylish and comfortable flats for travel for ME!

Me in Italy in Summer 2018 wearing the WRONG shoes!

From Ireland to Manhattan to Hawaii to Toronto to make own backyard in the Washington, DC area and everywhere in between, I ALWAYS want to dress stylishly when I travel! I have found myself opting for stylish flats on my travel days, but also wanting the comfort that I find and value in my Sherpa-lined slippers that I wear around the house. Over the years, I have found myself very fortunate to both collaborate with and discover some incredible footwear brands that focus on stylish and comfortable flats for travel – many of which also focus on ethical and sustainability within their craftsmanship. Here, I will be sharing my *very* favorite stylish and comfortable flats for travel (and also long work days, nights on the town, concerts, walks, and more!).

A special thank you to the team at Reserve Pass for sponsoring today’s blog post. Please note that all opinions are my own.

Gift Guide: For the Jetsetter

Over the years, I have fallen in love with travel. I have been super fortunate to live in both Italy and England for a month each in 2018 while studying abroad for the summer back in my college years. On the same token, I have also traveled to different parts of North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware on a semi-regular basis to visit family and friends. That all being said, I consider myself to be a jetsetter from time to time!

*Disclaimer: Please note that this post contains affiliate links, which means that if you purchase through one of my links, then I will receive a small commission. This commission is at no extra cost to you. Additionally, this post is not sponsored, and all opinions are my own.*

My for the jetsetter gift guide was A BLAST to create. I had fun looking through and pretending to shop for travel essentials that I have used and loved along with those that I may just add to my wishlist. Some of the travel essentials on this gift guide, including the Lilly Pulitzer scrunchie set, the Stoney Clover Lane Classic customizable backpack and large pouch, Vera Bradley grand hanging organizer, and Lands End weekender tote, I have used quite often when traveling. Needless to say, many of the products on this gift guide have been used regularly by myself during my travels, both near and far!

When it comes to pouches, they have been my saving grace in recent years when traveling! My Dad ALWAYS uses pouches to keep his things organized throughout his travels over the years. I used to think that he was CRAZY, yet now I am just as CRAZY if not even more than he is when judged by my younger self. In recent years, clear pouches and bags have become essential in concert venues and more across the world. Stoney Clover Lane’s customizable clear travel pouches (I purchased 2 during their sale back in late October!) are PERFECT as they’re large enough to hold the essentials, yet small enough to comfortably carry while out and about. I was also really excited to come across Sprinkled with Pink’s monogrammed pool bags, too, as they’re super adorable and also pretty great for events where there may be a clear bag policy.

Whether near or far, I am ALWAYS creating my own confetti wherever I go. My for the jetsetter gift guide allows others to create their own confetti both close to home and when on the road. Being bright and bubbly is always a go for me especially when on the go and I hope it is the same for you, too!

How I Afford to Travel Often

One of the BIGGEST questions I get over on my Instagram (follow me @_thepinkchickadee!) is how I can afford to travel often. Traveling has become one of my biggest passions and favorite things to do – I always have had a passion for learning more about the world around me, whether it be just down the street or across the world. Well, today, I’m going to be spilling ALLL the secrets on how I am able to travel on a regular basis!

*Disclaimer: Please note that this post contains affiliate links, which means that if you purchase through one of my links, then I will receive a small commission. This commission is at no extra cost to you. Additionally, this post is not sponsored, and all opinions are my own.*

Before I get into the meat of this blog post, I want to pre-phase by saying that travel is by all means a privilege. Not everyone is able to even go on a trip. I have seen travel to be one of the biggest blessings, opportunities, and learning experiences in my life. But, not everyone gets the opportunity to do so. Personally, I feel beyond lucky to be able to travel as much as I do, yet have the option to even be able to do so. Remember to count your blessings, including travel.

Travel, as we all know, can be COSTLY. With flights, transport when there, gas, lodging, meals, coffees, activities, and souvenir shopping, and much more, it ALL adds up. Trust me, it’s hard to factor in all of those costs when away from home even for a day. And, depending on where you go, different aspects of travel can add up even more, especially when it comes to getting into an accident, cell phone plan while/if going abroad, needing to see a health care provider in case of an emergency, and many things not even mentioned. Realistically speaking, it is HARD to factor in all of those costs.

Now, for the ways that I afford to travel often:

  • Set aside some money from each paycheck in a travel fund – no MATTER how little it may be, every cent adds up over time!
  • Join a rewards program with an airline of your choosing and/or Amtrak – personally, I have a United Airlines Rewards Membership and an Amtrak membership, as my most frequented cities are Philadelphia and Raleigh to see friends who live there. My favorite Washington, DC area airport – Dulles International Airport – is a United Airlines hub, so it makes it easy to get flights in and out of there at great prices. Hopefully in the new year, I can visit my cousin Sabrina in Boston and score a GREAT flight deal!
  • Travel to cities where you have friends/family that live there and stay with them if you can – that way, ALL you have to pay for is getting there, meals (but probably not as many if you were to stay in a hotel!), and activities. Failing that, do your research and find some options that are cheaper than hotels. You may find hostels or campsites that are ideal for your trip. For example, take a look at Travel Resorts of America reviews for plenty of advice on where to stay as you travel through America.
  • Be strategic with PTO days – I usually choose to take 2 day weekend trips or 3 day weekend trips on long weekends that my company already gives us off, where I don’t need to use any PTO. I feel VERY fortunate to say that I have unlimited PTO as per my company’s policy. Yet, I like to use my PTO accordingly and strategically and within a realistic reason. At the same time, I try to take off one-two weeks to truly unplug and get away, along with a few longer weekends sprinkled in throughout the year where I actually use PTO.
  • Eat a mixture of expensive dining meals and eat in as much as you can – If you stay with a friend/family member, be sure to take advantage of the free meals. The same goes for staying at a hotel that offers free breakfast (that’s something I usually look for, too!). You can ALWAYS eat affordably when traveling to, such as microwaveable items from CVS or a local grocery store or going to a local cafe or even fast food place.
  • Frequently scan flight/train fares – This helps OFTEN! I booked a trip to New York City on Amtrak during Christmas time this year for ~$90 round trip (the average fare is $200+ this time of year). I booked my trip in August, but it was a GREAT deal and I got a great deal on a hotel, too. If I hadn’t randomly scanned New York City at Christmas time train fares on the fly, then I wouldn’t have booked my trip of a lifetime and of my dreams, either!
  • Get a travel rewards credit card – Personally, I use the Capital One Venture credit card which gives 75,000 bonus miles if you spend $4,000 in 3 months on every day essentials, which can be reimbursed for travel along with miles earned regularly when spending!
  • Pick and choose things to do – When traveling, you ALWAYS have to pick and choose where you go, what you do, eat, etc. My biggest piece of advice is to be strategic with it all. Most of the major museums in Washington, DC are free, yet most of the major museums in Paris or New York City usually aren’t. If you choose to do a rather costly activity during the day, then you may want to do something more affordable the next or eat a less pricey meal(s).

Being able to travel has been one of the greatest blessings in my life. I love being able to meet new people along the way, too. When traveling, you always have to be realistic and reasonable, no matter how frequent you do it. But, above all else, HAVE FUN!!!

Why You Should Play Tourist in Your Own City!

The other day, I was hanging out with my high school friends Haley and Violet. When, Haley stated “let’s all go into DC one of these days and play tourist!” Well, on my Instagram (follow me @_thepinkchickadee!), then you probably already know that I live in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC. Well, just a week before Haley and Violet and I hung out, my best friend Amanda who lives in New Jersey came to town and we did just that: play tourist in my own city!

Life can get crazy and make us want to simply just rest close to home, but sometimes a breath of fresh air can make it all worth it. Especially when that breath of fresh air is close to home, we can really truly feel refreshed. Ever since I moved to the Washington, DC area right after graduating from college in North Carolina, I have loved being able to have a plethora of new, exciting, and fun things to do in my own backyard. As compared to North Carolina, Washington, DC has several more things to do on the weekends and every weekend at that, as compared to once in a blue moon back in North Carolina. Living here in the Washington, DC as a whole has been a breath of fresh air for me! I have friends from North Carolina, New Jersey, and beyond visiting me from time to time. And, each time a new friend comes, we usually go visit the typical touristy areas of Washington, DC, which ALWAYS gives me new light and more and more love for the city that I live in.

Each and every single time I come to the Washington, DC area and play tourist, I start at The National Mall. The National Mall is home to the Smithsonian Museums and gardens, including the Smithsonian Castle, Smithsonian Gardens, the National Gallery of Art, the National Archives, the Museum of Natural History, the Air and Space Museum, and many many many more. At the same time, the National Mall has lines of fields perfect for picnics and admiring the United States Capitol (with the Supreme Court Building and Library of Congress behind it) on one side and the National Monument (with the Lincoln Memorial, World War 11 Memorial, and Korean War Memorial behind it) on the other. Food trucks also line the National Mall with a plethora of types of cuisines to choose from, whether it be your typical hot dogs and soft pretzels, to ice cream, Boba tea, and even Mexican, Mediterranean, and Asian delights. So, that being said, it is EASY to spend a full day including lunch and dinner on the National Mall. And, I usually do to some extent when friends come to town!!

And, perhaps, when you play tourist in your own city, you’ll find something new to you, too! Every time I play tourist in Washington, DC, I see it all again from a new perspective. Whether with a fellow Washingtonian or not, I always strive to keep a bright, open-minded mindset, as I see the same exact sights for the 100th+ time (luckily for me, it doesn’t get old, though!!!). For example, when Amanda was in town a few weeks back, we tried a new-to-me and her restaurant that I have always wanted to try: The Hamilton. The Hamilton is a well-known restaurant in Washington, DC apart of Clyde’s Restaurant Group (which also houses the iconic and historic Old Ebbitt Grill, too!) and has sweet Americana charm and cuisine. People from ALL over the world eat at The Hamilton and all of the other Clyde’s Restaurant Group restaurants when they visit the nation’s capital. Amanda and I were BLOWN AWAY by The Hamilton in Washington, DC. The food (she ordered gnocchi and I ordered a crab cake sandwich and we each got a charcuterie board to start!!), drinks (she ordered a boozy milkshake and I ordered my typical drink order – a glass of Cabernet), and the service was all to die for! Not to mention, the environment was charming, yet timeless Americana. It was such a great experience to be able to visit The Hamilton and add another place been to off of my Washington, DC things that I did mental list!

Amanda and I had a GREAT time while she visited Washington, DC. Obviously, we visited the National Mall (!!!!) amongst a few other sites and ate at The Hamilton. I cannot wait to see her again and explore Washington, DC as a tourist in my own city with Haley and Violet, too!

How I Packed for Study Abroad

I got a few questions asked on my Instagram (follow me @_thepinkchickadee) in the past few months about how I packed for my summers studying abroad back in college. So, for context, I studied abroad when I was in college for a month in Sansepolcro, Italy (a small town in Tuscany about 90 minutes from Florence), London, England (AND stayed in Kensington Square right by the home of Prince William and Kate Middleton of Kensington Palace!!!), and San Ignacio, Belize (a small town located in the rainforest region of Belize AND just steps away from the Cahal Pech Mayan Ruins). I spent a month in both Italy and London and approximately 3 weeks in Belize. That all being said, I learned A LOT about packing and how to pack for being away from home for two months at a time (Italy and London was a back to back month-by-month program) AND living out of one suitcase for it all, too.

Luggage – when it came to luggage, my Dad bought me a set of Caribbean Blue Travel Pro suitcases (a carry on and larger bag to check) when I graduated from high school. That summer after I graduated from high school, I travelled to Bulgaria and Greece for two weeks and my Dad wanted me to have a set of high-quality suitcases for my upcoming travels, as he knew that Bulgaria and Greece would be the first of many trips for me. Indeed, he was NOT wrong – haha! So, that being said, definitely INVEST in high-quality luggage before studying abroad and traveling a ton. I would suggest for study abroad bringing a large enough suitcase under 50 pounds (the challenge for sure) to check and put a smaller duffel bag in that checked bag for weekend trips which you WILL take as well as to HAUL all of the souvenirs that you buy, too – if you’re me then this is necessary. At the same time, definitely get luggage tags, too, so you can easily identify your luggage at ALL times. The same goes for passport covers since every United States passport looks the same on the outside.

Clothing – Research the climate of the place(s) that you are going to be studying abroad in and/or KNOW that you will be visiting while abroad. Study the climate for the approximate dates that you are going to be there (a basic Google search can give you information!). If you are going to London, for example, you may want to bring a pair of rain boots or buy a pair there to save luggage space. Yes, Hunter Boots and Doc Martins ARE cheaper in England than they are here. The same concept goes for leather goods in Tuscany and Longchamp bags across all of Europe. At the same time, be sure to think of some of the outfits that you may want to pack, given the sites that you will be seeing. I know for me, that I like to wear certain things to certain places (such as an elegant dress for a river cruise in Paris) or a shawl and maxi dress to cover my shoulders and knees in an Italian cathedral (as per the dress code there). You also want to bring as many pieces that can be interchangeably styled/worn multiple times and with different things (think along the lines of a capsule wardrobe). For me, that meant a lot of solid tops with printed skirts and both solid and printed dresses. Accessories can ALSO make an outfit unique and are super light, too. Luckily, most home bases for study abroad have laundry facilities which are worthwhile using while there at least on a weekly basis. The following are tips for packing clothing wisely:

  • Roll all garments – that way, you can fit more things in your suitcase
  • Use packing squares – trust me, they are my best friend when I travel and SO convenient and portable for when packing, too
  • Use zippered pouches for non-clothing items, such as jewelry – that way, they are sealed and not visible to the common eye. I usually use my Ipsy pouches, bright The Dollar Tree pouches, and Stoney Clover Lane pouches
  • Organize clothing by color, type of garment (e.g. dresses, pants, tops, etc.) – it’ll be MUCH easier to find everything when you unpack everything upon arrival
  • Pack anti-wrinkle spray and Tide To Go – so, clothing items that are prone to wrinkling during the trip abroad will be LESS wrinkly when you unpack and hang them up AND all of those wine stains can come out before laundry day approaches

Shoes – In case you didn’t hear it from me, PACK A PAIR OF COMFORTABLE SHOES!!! You will be walking a ton. Whatever those shoes may be for you, make sure they are comfortable BEFORE you leave the country. I bought a pair of Crocs flip flops that I thought would be comfortable, only to wear them throughout two Italian towns and suffering from PLENTY of blisters throughout the day. So, to my surprise, I ended up wearing my already broken in Classic Jacks Jack Rogers sandals. I also regularly wore an adorable classic pair of Elie Tahari flats – sadly, I ripped those to their inner core, but they were beautiful and already broken into while abroad.

Toiletries – This is something that you can easily purchase when you’re actually abroad. Many countries sell the same toiletries or at minimum similar toiletry products to what you can find in the United States. These toiletries include – shampoo, conditioner, makeup remover, soap, body wash, lotion, and much more. Italy has a Lush store that I bought a lot of shower essentials from as well as the grocery store in Sansepolcro and the local convenience store in London known as Boots. I did bring my own makeup products and skincare products, as my skin is sensitive. BUT, I did only bring one versatile eyeshadow palette which was an accomplishment for me for two months. I also brought my own haircare products, too. TRUST ME, all of those toiletries take up a ton of weight in your luggage, so it’s definitely worth just getting what you need while abroad instead and throwing out before you leave (definitely buy what you need for the time you’re there, too).

Technology – Make sure to bring your phone, laptop, headphones, cameras, Air Pods, chargers, cords, plugs, and all other necessary devices while abroad. As for chargers, make sure you buy at least 2 adaptable plugs to the outlets within the country that you’re going to be studying in. EVERY country is different and most outlets differ by continent. My Mom bought me two plugs off of Amazon that I use to this day. Amazon is definitely the way to go to buy, but be sure to look up reviews, too. Definitely pack all technology-related items in your carry on when you board the plane, too.

Medicine – Make sure that you have at least a 90 day supply of all needed medications before you go abroad. Trust me, you never know what could happen and you want to be prepared. I always like to keep my medications in a sealed pouch that is not clear that way nobody knows the medications that I take. At the same time, it’s important to carry a doctor’s note for all prescribed drugs that you are taking, too, because you literally never know when you’ll need it. Put these medications in your carry on when you board the plane as well. ALL 90 days. Trust me.

To read about my study abroad experiences, look no further than the following posts:

Now that you’re packed, it is the time to go live out your study abroad dreams!!

My Packing Essentials!

If you know me, then you know I pack *way more* than I need even for a day trip! Needless to say, I am an overpacker and I am not afraid to admit it. I have been fortunate enough to travel and be able to do it quite often, even for the day in my new city of Washington, DC. So, I have picked up several packing essentials of mine along the way, which I will be sharing today!

*Disclaimer: Please note that this post contains affiliate links, which means that if you purchase through one of my links, then I will receive a small commission. This commission is at no extra cost to you. Additionally, this post is not sponsored, and all opinions are my own.*

My Packing Essentials!

  1. Packing Squares – If you have been following several fellow influencers, then you have probably seen the hype behind packing squares! Packing squares range in all rectangular/square sizes and are amazing when allowing one to pack a ton of things, especially into smaller luggage items. They are an excellent organizational tool that allows you to even categorize your items that you’re packing, such as items for two different locations or lingerie versus pajamas and loungewear/activewear versus dressier items. When I travel overseas, I ALWAYS pack my items in packing squares – they’re easy and practical and allow me to store all of my items in one space. Tip of the trade: rolling your clothing items and garments into a packing square allows you to maximize your space and pack many more items than you could have ever anticipated!
  2. Duffle Bag – Duffle bags have been amazing for me. They’re not only great for weekend trips and road trips of all kinds to say the least, but they’re also pretty great for carry-on’s for plane rides, too. I have owned multiple Vera Bradley duffle bags for 10+ years now, and they are AMAZING! They have lasted all these years, too, on all of my many trips which says something for sure. Last year, I purchased the Lands’ End Canvas Duffle and *of course* monogrammed it. Let’s say that I love that duffle bag, as well!
  3. Pouches – Whether for a day trip or a long weekend away, pouches have been my favorite essential to bring practically everywhere. I use them for makeup, feminine products, jewelry, work things, and even essentials within my purse. My favorites include pouches from gifts with purchase when I buy my Clinique foundation in multiples during the holidays, thrift store pouches, and most recently Rae Dunn pouches. Let’s just say that my pouches dominate my bags, especially when packing! Tip of the trade: pouches are great when you have totes/bags without a zipper. That way your items stay secure and are stylishly covered.
  4. Insulated Water Bottle – Insulated water bottles are AMAZING for travel. They keep your water cool and are a great necessity to carry your water wherever you go. When I studied abroad in Italy, they had free safe drinking water fountains all across the city of Florence and others for tourists and locals alike to fill up on water and stay hydrated. The same concept goes for United States cities, too, as water fountains are everywhere you turn in all major cities and buildings and beyond. You also can help safe the planet when carrying an insulated water bottle, as you’re not buying a bunch of plastic bottles. Tip of the trade: pack an empty insulated water bottle when boarding a plane and fill it up once you get to the gate and through security. That way, you save $5+ on a water bottle at the airport!
  5. Printed Bandana/Head Scarf – One of the most stylish ways to travel is with a printed bandana/head scarf! I use them to tie onto my suitcases and bags to look all that more stylish. Especially when traveling, exhaustion is real. So, anything stylish is the way to go!
  6. Crystal Lite Caffeinated Packets – If you know me, then you know I am OBSESSED with my caffeinated beverages. In case you didn’t know, Crystal Lite has caffeinated sugar-free packets that are great for fueling up in the middle of the day. Like many of y’all do too, I struggle with the afternoon, post-lunch slug. So, I use caffeinated Crystal Lite packets from my local grocery store/Target/Walmart to purchase them. The best part?! I can add a packet to any water bottle, shake it when shut, and then go on my merry way!
  7. Mini Hair Brush – There are many times that I have out of all things forgotten my hair brush. I always leave a mini hair brush from The Dollar Tree in my go-to travel bags for that reason. At the same time, traveling can be long and tiring, so being able to grab out a hair brush no matter how big or small is great to have. Not to mention, whenever I forget my hairbrush, I ALWAYS have one.
  8. Zippered Tote Bag – Although I do LOVE my un-zippered tote bags, I do love a zippered tote bag, especially when traveling. My favorites over the years have been my Longchamp large Le Pilage totes that I have in red, pink, and tan (I own this color in the Small size) as well as my Kate Spade polka dotted tote. Although I do not have one myself, Lilly Pulitzer also has some pretty awesome packable and washable totes. I have used these tote bags and they have been through it all and back and still remain in their beautiful and true glory. Durability is key, and my zippered tote bags are extraordinary for my travels.
  9. Hand Sanitizer – I may sound like a COVID-19 safety queen, but it’s true – hand sanitizer is your best friend when traveling! Wherever you go, pandemic or not, it is always good to make sure that you have some hand sanitizer on hand and take that extra precaution. My favorites been the Bath & Body Works spray bottle with 71% alcohol that come in the brand’s trademark scents. Mine has lasted me almost a year!
  10. Wifi Hotspot – Wherever you go, wifi is an essential when working. As I am working and working mostly remote, it is important that I am able to access all of my work-related matters from wherever I am. Tip of the trade: it is more secure for me to be on a wifi hotspot, than on a hotel or airport wifi.
  11. Oversized Sweatshirt – I am one that gets super cold at night. While at home, I love to wear a comfortable fluffy robe when I sleep, but it can be a pain to pack. So, I pack an oversized sweatshirt and college sweatshirts have been my favorite over the year to pack! For a typical trip, I usually pack a Lilly Pulitzer popover, Vineyard Vines Shop Shirt, or a trench coat (depending on the travel occasion) when traveling and then I pack an oversized sweatshirt (or two) just for sleeping. I also curl up with a blanket, too, so it’s nice to have an oversized sweatshirt to keep me warm through the cold nights, specifically in hotel rooms that can be FREEZING at night. My favorites recently have been from United Monograms!
  12. Insulated Coffee Cup – Just like an insulated water bottle, an insulated coffee cup is a must when traveling. It allows me to be able to drink coffee on the go and in-style. My favorites include the Vera Bradley coffee cups in their oh-so adorable prints. Not to mention, it is easy to pack and a whole lot cuter than the one’s given at hotels or if you’re lucky provided at an AirBnb!
  13. Batiste Dry Shampoo – When traveling, it is easy to not take a shower for a day or two or even three, especially when on the road. If you’re like me, then you probably use the hotel-provided shampoo whenever traveling. Sometimes the hotel-provided shampoos do not work magic on your hair. Batiste Dry Shampoo is the magical potion for allowing me to look and feel my best when I haven’t taken a shower or my hair doesn’t make me feel like the queen that I am. Tip of the trade: hit your local Walmart to Target for their travel sections with travel-sized products, including Batiste Dry Shampoo!
  14. Trench Coat – I am a sucker for an adorable trench coat! Personally, I have loved the glamour of them from the 2000’s movies, like Bride Wars and Confessions of a Shopaholic amongst many more. I have also discovered that trench coats spice up any look and add an element of glamour to any look, whether it be a yoga pants and t-shirt get up or a dress. I bought a trench coat and got it monogrammed from Lands’ End last year and I LOVE it!
  15. Disposable Face Masks – Yet *another* COVID-19 precaution! Disposable face masks are key to have on hand when traveling. Especially when you have to wear a face mask for hours on end, disposable face masks make it much more bearable and comfortable to do just that. I like to pack a pack of disposable face masks with me wherever I go. Tip of the trade: layer a disposable face mask underneath your cloth face mask. That way you look cute and are comfortable while you’re on the road!
  16. Laundry Travel Bag – Last but not the least, laundry travel bags are great for travel. While most people use them for laundry, I like to use mine for shoes. Since laundry bags come in all shapes and sizes, I use the bigger one’s for sneakers and boots and the smaller one’s for sandals, flats, and heels. Overall, they’re great for multi-purposing!

Interview with Female Solo Traveller Abi!

As women, it can be intimidating to travel especially alone. Independently traveling is daunting – national and international, alike. However, as women, international travel can be done on our own. Case in point, I am sharing a bit of my classmate, fellow woman in STEm, and good friend Abi’s experiences as a solo budget-friendly traveler. Abi is one of the most adventurous and sweetest people that I have met. Her travels have inspired me and I hope they inspire you too!

Tell me a little bit about yourself!

I am honestly never sure how to answer this question. My name is Abi. I am 21 years old and an avid solo traveler. I am a double major in Spanish and Computer Science at Meredith College where I am currently  finishing up my Sophomore year. I am from a tiny mountain town in Colorado and I like to call myself an  adventurer.

I know you are both a Computer Science and Spanish major at Meredith College. What made you choose two such different majors?

Well my reason for choosing each of my majors is drastically different. In high school I took AP Computer Science and I fell in love with coding. I knew almost instantly that I wanted to find a way to continue learning to code during my time in college. I really like the way coding makes you think, and it has always come easy to me.

Spanish on the other hand I have never been very good at, but in my home town there is a large population of native Spanish speakers. During my Junior year I was recruited to help with the ELL(ESL) program that helps students who have English as a second language succeed in school. I became fast friends with all of my tutees and they inspired me to continue with my Spanish career. I heard at one point that by 2025 about 50% of Americans will speak Spanish and I want to be on the bilingual side of that statistic. I love people and being able to help and communicate is something I strive to be able to do in all aspects of my life.

How do you plan to use both of your degrees upon graduation?

Honestly, I am still not super sure what I want to do after I graduate. I am hoping to find a job where I will have lots of opportunity to travel and meet new people. At this point I am considering becoming and app developer, and with such a large portion of the population of the USA speaking Spanish I am sure there are endless ways that it will be a wonderful skill even if not directly implemented in my job. I plan to start taking Mandarin this coming semester and if I can find the room in my schedule maybe by graduation I will speak all 3 of the global languages and be able to communicate with almost anyone on the planet.

You’re from Colorado and attend Meredith College in North Carolina, what made you choose to attend Meredith?

Lots of things lead me to Meredith. The first and foremost was the fact that private women’s colleges statistically give the most aid to high achieving students. When I was looking to apply for college after my gap year I knew that I was looking for a small university somewhere on the East coast to be closer to my extended family. I applied to a good number of schools, but Meredith offered me a position in the AWE-STEM program and that was the deciding factor of my choice in college.

What is your favorite thing to do at home in Colorado?

I am from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and while I am not the biggest fan of skiing I love to go white water rafting. My home county holds the headwaters to the Colorado river, that cuts the Grand Canyon, and we love to raft down it. If anyone doesn’t know what white water rafting is basically you get into a boat made out of rubber and paddle/float down river rapid. It is both exciting and fun, kind of like a natural roller coaster.

What is your favorite thing to do at college in North Carolina?

I am still learning to explore North Caroline to be honest Covid has made it hard for me to find cool things to do. I really have only lived in NC for 9 months with a whole year cutting that time down the middle. When our school got closed I had 5 days to move out and nowhere to go so I moved to South Carolina with my Grandma to finish off the semester then back home to Colorado for the one after that. I am now thankfully back in NC and hoping to find fun and Covid safe activities to do here.

So share with me a little bit about what made you choose to start travelling independently?

To be honest some really awful things happened in my personal life that threw off my plan. I had originally intended to go to Hollins University in Virginia, but life got in the way and it wasn’t meant to be. So I took a year off to find myself again and figure out who I wanted to be. I first toured Europe, the first half with one of my high school friends whose family was from the Netherlands. We visited 4 different countries together and by the end of our trip to Spain I felt confident enough to travel by myself. I visited both the United Kingdom and Germany by myself before returning to the states.

You took a gap year between high school and college to travel. How did your gap year shape you into the woman that you are today?

I think if it taught me anything my gap year showed me how much kindness and love there is in the world. Wherever I went and anything I did there was always people will and wanting to support me on my adventures. The realizations about the world made me a far more confident and component individual. Solo traveling means you have to make every decision and get yourself into and out of any and all situations that may arise. It makes you really sit with yourself and discover who you are and who you want to be. I highly recommend it to everyone I meet. Most people tell me they could never do what I did but every grand journey starts with a single step and I am sure any and everyone could successfully solo travel if they set their mind to it.

Where have you travelled independently?

I have traveled to Toronto, Philadelphia, Germany, the United Kingdom, and across Japan by myself. I have also road tripped across the USA by myself on my move back to NC.

What was your favorite place that you travelled to independently?

By far the best solo travel experience I have had was the summer I spent traveling across Japan by myself. I met so many amazing people and gained an incredible amount of perspective on the world that I never could have if I hadn’t been solo traveling.

Describe an experience during your travels where you had to problem-solve on the spot!

I think the scariest personal experience I had on my first solo trip was when I was on a train up to Whales in the UK and I couldn’t figure out how to open the door. By the time I found someone to help me I had already missed my stop adn road 45 min in the wrong direction and needed to ride the 45 min back to try and catch the boat I had a ticket for. I had to call my friend who I had traveled with the first part of the trip with’s family and get them to call the company that ran the boat to tell them I was coming since the representative only spoke Dutch. I made it with the help of a nice old lady, a reckless taxi driver and a mad dash to the boat but it was terrifying.

I know that you pride on being able to travel affordably. Share with us some of your tips and tricks for saving big on travel!

There are so many great way to save but every person has their own level of comfort they wish to uphold and different priorities so the first thing I do is a little bit of research and make an excel sheet of my trip expenses. Try to save in the areas that you don’t mind slumming it a little. I am rarely if ever in my “hotel” room so I love to stay at hostels. They do require you to share a room with strangers, but my personal policy is that strangers are just friends you haven’t met yet and while solo traveling it is great to make friends to share memories of your fun adventures with. I also don’t mind being sardined in on a flight so I try to find the cheapest flight possible I once found a direct flight from Raleigh to Denver that was $15. I was sore from the uncomfortable seat when I got off the plane but cheap flights are a great way to save. I like to find a flight on google and see what company it is on then go to their website to see if I can find a better deal. Most of the time (pre-pandemic at least) the cheapest flights are Frontier or Southwest. If you are not a pick eater finding a way to make your own food while traveling is also a great way to save money. Hostels will have kitchens to use and free food events. I always take advantage of those. If you are considering going to a hostel I recommend the Hostel World website/app as a woman. It can be scary to share a room but many hostels will have women only floors that adds an extra layer of safety. Hostel World also has a great review and comparison tool so you can find the best Hostel for what and where you are looking to stay.

What are some basic ways that any ordinary person can save on travel?

You can do all the things your ordinarily do to save money while traveling. A good thing to keep in mind is that regular people live there too. How are they getting by? Don’t go to the flashy tourist restaurant, go to the grocery store and buy food there or go to where the locals go out to eat. Only spend money on things you care about. Find free walking tours and parks and cheap or free things to do in the cities you visit. ALWAYS get a public transport card. They save you so much money on cabs or rental cars. Stay in Hostel if you are comfortable. They even have private rooms sometimes or smaller rooms, or gendered floors. Find ways to save money that is comfortable to you. The first thing is to think of what you are hoping to get out of your travel experience and cut everything else that you can.

Covid-19 has put a stunt into many of our travel plans. Through your experiences, how do you think travel will change post-pandemic?

My best guess is that airlines will require proof of vaccination to travel on them and that masks may be required in such tight spaces for a while into the future. I am not sure it will change much other than that it is hard to say. I don’t think that adventures will ever stop seeking adventure and we all want to make it as safe for everyone as we can so I am sure there will be changes but I don’t think they will be anything too drastic.

Where would you like to travel to next?

Funnily enough my plan before the pandemic was to travel to China and SouthEast Asia. It is one of the cheapest places to solo travel and has a great hostel environment. I am not sure when I will get to go there as the Visa I intended to apply for is no longer being offered to Americans but I am hoping to go on a Scuba diving trip next winter with my dad. And possibly on the Meredith study abroad Costa Rica trip next summer.

Where would you like to travel back to again?

I think I would like to go many new places before returning anywhere, but Japan was by far the best place I have ever been and I would love to go back someday.

Lastly, what would you tell yourself before you started your independent travels?

You will be fine. You’ve got this. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or directions when you need them.

You only live once in this world, like Abi did with her international travels, if you can dream it, you can do it, and you will be just fine.
