About Delaware Botanic Gardens

The Delaware Botanic Gardens (not to be confused with the University of Delaware Botanic Gardens in Newark, Delaware) is the only botanic garden in Southern Delaware, and it is on a mission to provide a world-class garden that delights visitors with a focus on education and sustainability. One of the distinct aspects of this Botanic garden is that it has a variety of different landscapes, including: wetlands, woodlands, and gardens.

In 2012, a group of local Sussex County citizens joined forces to fill an unmet need for horticultural education and public gardening resources and was, soon after, granted nonprofit status. Since its 2012 roots, the Delaware Botanic Gardens has since been named “Best Attraction” by the Southern Delaware Tourism Office, as well as accolades statewide (learn more here).

Above all else, the Delaware Botanic Gardens strives to create a place where every visitor, volunteer, and staff member is treated with dignity and respect as well as a greater knowledge basis and appreciation for nature.

Getting There

Address: 30220 Piney Neck Road, Dagsboro, Delaware 19939

Just about 13 miles West of Bethany Beach, Delaware off of Piney Neck Road, it is easiest to drive to the Delaware Botanic Gardens. This Botanic garden is about 120 from Philadelphia and Washington, DC, 112 miles from Balitmore, and 100 miles from Wilmington, making it a day trip option from each city (or a part of a Delaware Beaches getaway itinerary!). It is worth noting that there is plenty of free parking onsite on gravel.

For more information on getting there, then be sure to check out the Botanic garden’s website.

Opening Hours & Admission

In 2026, the Delaware Botanic Gardens will be opened March 19-November 29 and is open in the Summer Thursday-Monday from 9am-4pm with extended hours until sunset on Thursday and Monday. Tickets are under $20/person and can either be booked onsite upon entry or in advance on their website.

I recommend checking out the Botanic garden’s calendar for the most up-to-date information on admission and hours, alongside any special events offered, including their notable Welcome Walks around the grounds.

In terms of accessibility, most trails are well-marked and paved with plenty of benches to sit and rest throughout your experience. There are a few stairwells for some scenic viewpoints throughout the gardens, but nothing is without railings or extremely steep. Truly, everyone can have a great time at the Delaware Botanic Gardens!

Know Before You Go

Upon planning your Botanic gardens visit, here are a few things to keep in mind before you go:

  • Upon entering the grounds, I highly recommend asking the ultra-friendly staff and volunteers for a map including an interactive scavenger hunt for visitors of all ages but especially kids, as you will learn so much about these magnificent Botanic gardens!
  • Visiting the Botanic gardens is a 100% outdoor activity, so be sure to check the weather for inclement weather and come prepared upon planning your day.
  • Bags and backpacks are welcome, as well as strollers.
  • There are restrooms onsite, and the restrooms’ outdoor area and grounds are beautiful!
  • Be sure to bring a water bottle or enjoy some prepackaged snacks/lunch (that you bring) at the picnic tables and benches throughout the gardens. But, please be sure to clean up after yourselves and others that come with you, as the gardens are a place for folks to enjoy and we want future visitors to enjoy it, too.
  • If it is a hot and sunny day when you plan to visit, I always recommend bringing sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses, and perhaps a mobile fan to ensure you have a comfortable and wonderful experience. I will note though that part of the trails across the gardens are in the shade, but some of it isn’t.
  • Cameras and photography is allowed – I brought my own camera – and it is an excellent place to take photos of Southern Delaware’s wetlands, woodlands, and gardens!
  • Most importantly, have fun!!

Points of Interest

The Botanic gardens offer wetlands, woodlands, gardens, and more! Here are some of the many points of interest that you can see throughout your visit:

  • Meadow Gardens
  • Woodland Gardens
  • Walking Trails (all throughout the grounds!)
  • Pepper Creek
  • Garden Galleries
  • Bird-Watching
  • Great Lawn
  • Freshwater Pond
  • Children’s Discoveries

Truly, the Delaware Botanic Gardens has a plethora of things to see, admire, and learn about throughout your experience!

Wrap-Up

Whether you’re local to Southern Delaware or a visitor, I highly recommend checking out these unique Botanic gardens. Not only will you learn more about the locals ecosystems within Southern Delaware, but you will also leave with a greater appreciation for nature overall. The best part?!?! There is something for everyone of all ages and life stages to enjoy at this magnificent Botanic gardens!

Introduction To Preppy Style & Its Modern Evolution

What is Preppy Style?!

Preppy Style is a classic, all-American aesthetic that is rooted in the collegiate traditions of the East Coast Ivy League colleges and prep schools of the 20th century. Preppy Style blends refined classic sophistication with youthful, sporty elements, incorporating structured silhouettes, bright + pastel colors, textured fabrics such as Tweed and cable-knit, and wardrobe staples like loafers, oxford shirts, and blazers.

All-things preppy style saw a resurgence in the 1980’s thanks to satirical The Official Preppy Handbook – published by Lisa Birnbach. In the late 2000’s, preppy style got a modern-day spin – headbands and pleated Mini skirts and all – thanks to shows like Gossip Girl. Today, preppy style remains popular worldwide from both trendsetters and lifelong preppy style lovers, alike.

Essential Pieces + Foundational Items To Your Preppy Wardrobe

Creating the perfect preppy Wardrobe begins with foundational pieces that offer maximum versatility. These carefully curated items work together seamlessly, allowing you to transition them effortlessly from classroom to boardroom to coffee shop to evening activities and everything in between.

It’s important to note that your preppy must-haves may differ from my own preppy must-haves. Everyone’s style, while preppy, is extremely uniquely yours and only yours.

About Harper’s Ferry

Originally settled in 1732 by Robert Harper who, in 1761, established a ferry service across the Potomac River, Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia was officially established. Harper’s Ferry was then a part of the Colony of Virginia and then the state of Virginia until the American Civil War when West Virginia was established as a state. Its location with close proximity to Maryland and at the intersection of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers made for Harper’s Ferry to have lots of water power and was selected by former President George Washington in 1799 as a site for a major United States Armor and Arsenal. In the 1830’s, the arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad and the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal made the town into a booming commercial and railroad hub during the heart of the global Industrialization era.

Throughout the next few decades in the latter 1800’s, Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia played a significant part in Civil War and African American Rights history. On October 16, 1859, radical abolitionist John Brown led an armed group of 21 men via an assault on the federal armory, which served as a catalyst for the American Civil War. Throughout the American Civil War, Harper’s Ferry changed its hands several times and is historically cited to have been changed upwards of 14 times. Most notably in Harper’s Ferry, the 1862 Siege of Harper’s Ferry happened where Confederate General Stonewall Jackson surrounded and forced the surrender of over 12,000 Union troops. Unfortunately, after the American Civil War, the town of Harper’s Ferry was severely damaged and destroyed, including its industries and infrastructure. Post-American Civil War and into the early 1900’s, Harper’s Ferry became an important center for African American Rights with the founding of Storer College in 1867 – one of the first fully integrated institutions with the purpose of educating newly freed slaves. In 1906, Storer College hosted the second meeting of the Niagara Movement – a significant precursor for the NAACAP – which included prominent Civil Rights leaders such as W.E.B. Du Bois.

Today, the town of Harper’s Ferry has a population of ~270 people and no stoplight in sight (unlike its neighboring towns). However, the residents and national park rangers at Harper’s Ferry National Park reign proud that the town’s name is in the national park that brings in visitors from across the country and beyond. The location of Harper’s Ferry is approximately at the halfway mark of the East Coast’s well-known Appalachian Trail (that starts in Maine and ends in Georgia) at the intersection of the Potomac River and Shenandoah River.

Getting There

Harper’s Ferry is an easy day trip and ride away from both Washington, DC and Baltimore as well as its neighboring suburbs in Maryland and Northern Virginia. There are a variety of ways to get to Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, whether by car or train.

By Car:

From Washington, DC or Baltimore, Harper’s Ferry is about a 90 minute drive (or less!) with an Amtrak station in the heart of the historical district and Harper’s Ferry National Park.To be able to drive and park and sightsee within Harper’s Ferry’s historical district and the adjacent Harper’s Ferry National Park, it is easiest to purchase a National Park Service (NPS) day pass or use an already-purchased/borrowed NPS pass.

When visiting Harper’s Ferry, to hike or sightseeing downtown (or both!), I suggest parking at the Visitor’s Center (about 1-2 miles away from the historic downtown) which all visitors can park at either with the purchase of a $20 day pass/vehicle or an already valid and issued National Park Pass/vehicle. Parking can be hit or miss in downtown Harper’s Ferry, especially on a crowded day and there is plenty of parking at the Visitor’s Center (even on crowded days!). The Visitor’s Center offers free shuttles to and from the historic downtown Harper’s Ferry every few minutes. Due to the high volume of crowds, there were more shuttle buses than usual to/from downtown and the Visitor’s Center.

By Train:

From Washington, DC or Baltimore, Harper’s Ferry is easily accessible via a scenic ride on Amtrak or the MARC Train. If you’re traveling from Baltimore, then you will likely have a transfer in Washington, DC at Union Station. See more information on booking an Amtrak or MARC Train ticket here and here.

When To See The Fall Colors in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia

Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia’s Fall Foliage is typically at its peak when Shenandoah National Park’s Fall Foliage is at its peak due to its close proximity. I have a predictor on when Shenandoah National Park’s Fall Foliage will be at its peak based on previous years as an avid annual visitor each season. Check it out here.

How To Navigate The Fall Foliage Crowds

From past personal experience, the crowds were at its peak due to it being during the peak Fall foliage. First off, my friend and I had an 8am departure and arrived downtown Harpers Ferry around 9-10am to beat the crowds. And, we ended up departing Harpers Ferry’s Visitor’s Center just after 12pm, which is when the crowds started to exponentially pick up. SO, needless to say, its best to arrive early and park at the Visitor’s Center to avoid the crowds and parking issues.

Wrap-Up

From history to hiking to adventures and brews and boos and everything in between, Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia truly has it all!
