About George Washington’s Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon is open 365 days a year and is America’s popular historic estate – with over 96 million visitors since 1860 when it first opened to the public. The estate of America’s 1st President and Commander in Chief George Washington, Mount Vernon is run by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association who are on a mission to preserve, manage, and restore the it to the highest standards alongside educating people throughout the world about the life, legacy, and values of George Washington to ensure his strong character and leadership values will continue to inform, inspire, and empower future generations. 

At Mount Vernon estate, guests can visit Washington’s mansion which he resided in with his wife – the first First Lady Martha Washington – as well as the tomb of George and Martha Washington, a memorial dedicated to the enslaved people who lived and worked on the estate, as well as numerous other original structures, farmlands, harbor, Ford Orientation Center, Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center and gardens. Today, Mount Vernon also has an onsite gift shop (which is excellent!!) and restaurant: Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant.

Additional educational and engaging experiences include the vast collection of the George Washington Presidential Library at Mount Vernon (open 9am-5pm on weekdays) and George Washington’s Gristmill & Distillery, which produces the same whiskey that Washington produced in the 1700s.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that George Washington’s Mount Vernon is not publicly funded, but instead, runs on donations, visitors’ admission, and the countless work and preservation of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association.

Getting There

Situated alongside the Potomac River just outside of Washington, DC, Mount Vernon is easily accessible by car and offers free parking. Visitors can also reach Mount Vernon via public transportation, via boat cruise from Washington, DC’s The Wharf and Old Town Alexandria waterfront alongside the Potomac River, or by bike via the gorgeous tree-lined, riverfront George Washington Memorial Parkway from Alexandria to Mount Vernon.

Know Before You Go

Before embarking on your Mount Vernon adventure back in time, here are a few things you should know before you go:

  • It is worth noting that once at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, there are primarily uphill/downhill walks within its gorgeous gardens, trails, and gravel walkways. Most visitors to Mount Vernon will have to walk this uphill/downhill walk to get to/from the palace especially when walking through the gardens. Once inside the Mount Vernon estate and museums, there are marble and wooden staircases and walkways. Be sure to plan accordingly, especially if there is rain.
  • Mount Vernon is a dog-friendly place! Well-behaved dogs are welcome on leash on the property, however, they are not allowed inside the mansion or any museums. 
  • If you booked a timed entry experience, Mount Vernon is a timed experience, but typically visitors can still enter on the day that they booked for – be sure to arrive at least 10-15 minutes before your timed the entry slot.
  • Take a moment to savor this incredible palace and gallery and all of its masterpieces within it – many of which were owned and collected by George Washington, himself! Truly, Mount Vernon is a magnificent place like no other!!
  • Personally, I would budget 2-4 hours at Mount Vernon when visiting. It is SO easy to get lost in the Mansion, museums and gardens and you’ll want to maximize your time there. I also suggest visiting the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant to eat like Washington did. Truly, you won’t want to miss anything!!
  • Cameras are allowed, however, flash photography is prohibited.
  • Wear comfortable, suitable shoes for uphill climbing on marble staircases and in the gardens – which are present through parts of the estate and its magnificent grounds. In fact, I have a guide on comfortable + stylish flats for travel if you need any inspiration!

Truly, I am beyond proud to be a member at Mount Vernon!

The Mansion, museums, gardens, farmlands, and everything in between on its grounds are seriously such a wonderful way to spend your day strolling throughout. About Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

Situated between Nice and Monaco overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild also known as the “Pink palace” was once home to Baroness Beatrice de Rothschild, who used her massive inheritance post-divorce to build her dream estate. The estate was built by Beatrice in 1907-1912 and was designed by architect Aaron Messiah with its shape like the deck of a ship. This gorgeous pink Belle Epoque Villa houses a vast art collection and is surrounded by nine themed gardens: French garden, Spanish garden, Florentine garden, stone garden, Japanese garden, exotic garden, Provençal garden and rose garden.

Upon Beatrice’s death in 1934, she bequeathed her estate to the Académie des Beaux-Arts, which is part of the Institut de France. And, in 1938, the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild opened to the public in 1938 and earned its status as a French historical monument via classification in 1993.

When visiting the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, I highly recommend stopping by their onsite Restaurant & Beatrice Tea-Room even if just for a glass of wine (or Spritz like myself!). Getting There

One key aspect about visiting the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is that it is housed a bit outside of both Nice and Monte Carlo in the heart of the French Riviera, hence, there is a bit of planning involved in getting there. It is easiest to drive or use ride share to get there. There is free onsite parking, too, if you choose to rent a car, and there is an easy spot for rideshares to pick up and drop off.

Besides driving there, while I won’t spend too much time outlining how to get to the Villa from Nice or Monaco (as I opted to use Uber to get there and back from Nice, which is easy and cost under 20 Euros each way), there is an excellent resource which outlines how to get there if you opt to use public transportation to and from the Villa, however, it will take you more time than driving.

Beyond going on your own to the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, it is also worth noting that there are multiple tour operators that run group tours to the Villa as a part of a day tour across the French Riviera. Book your tickets to a group tour to see the Villa here. It is worth noting that these group tours will typically provide transport and admission to the Villa.

Know Before You Go

  • To ensure there are no private events at the Villa, be sure to check out their website for the most up-to-date information before visiting.
  • It is worth noting that once at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, there are a few uphill/downhill walks within its 9 gorgeous gardens. Most visitors to Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild will have to walk this uphill/downhill walk to get to/from the palace especially when walking through the gardens. Once at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, there are marble staircases and walkways. Be sure to plan accordingly, especially if there is rain.
  • If you booked a timed entry experience, Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is a timed experience, but typically visitors can still enter on the day that they booked for – be sure to arrive at least 10-15 minutes before your timed the entry slot.
  • Take a moment to savor this incredible palace and gallery and all of its masterpieces within it! Truly, Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is a magnificent work of art like no other!!
  • Personally, I would budget 2-4 hours at Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild when visiting. It is SO easy to get lost in the museums and gardens and you’ll want to maximize your time there. Truly, you won’t want to miss anything!!
  • Cameras are allowed, however, flash photography is prohibited.
  • Wear comfortable, suitable shoes for uphill climbing on marble staircases and in the gardens – which are present through parts of the palace and its magnificent gardens. In fact, I have a guide on comfortable + stylish flats for travel if you need any inspiration!

Is Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild Worth Visiting?!

YES!!!! Personally, I have always been someone who wants to go out of my way to visit the estate and gardens when in Europe, especially a pink one!!!

This Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild reviews isn’t complete without my own personal verdict! Not only was the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild truly have it all within its interiors and exteriors and of course its gardens, but it also boasts so many stunning views of the Mediterranean and French Riviera. I also LOVE how the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild offers an onsite restaurant and tea room to, indeed make it worth a wonderful morning or afternoon visit. 

Some of the most breathtaking views of the French Riviera that I ever encountered happened to be at Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild! Visiting this stunning villa was one of my best highlights of my trip to the South of France!

Before I start sharing some adorable preppy dresses Amazon edition, I am going to share a few things to note before you buy:

  • Prices on many clothing items (like everything else on Amazon) do fluctuate. It is worthwhile to monitor prices on Amazon, enjoy coupons when given the opportunity to.
  • Garments do come and go in and out of stock, like a lot of inventory on Amazon (or anywhere else). Be sure to keep an eye on garments of interest upon buying.

About Pena Palace

Housed in the lush woodlands and summits of Sintra’s landscape, Pena Palace is a historic jewel also known as the Pinnacle of Romanticism in Portugal. Initially a monastery in the 1500’s when Manuel I ordered the construction of a religious building the Royal Monastery of Our Lady of Pena, later entrusted to the Order of Saint Jerome in Sintra to becoming a palace via additions by King Ferdinand II in the mid-1800’s, today, Pena Palace honors the legacy of the King-Artist.

King Ferdinand II was one of Portugal’s most cultured men of the 1800’s, having spoken German, Hungarian, French, English, Spanish, and Italian in addition to Portuguese as well as an extensive education in the arts, hence his nationally known name as the King-Artist. Initially, Pena Palace was a restoration project as a Summer residence for the King-Artist and his family, however, after the unexpected death of his wife Maria II in 1853, Ferdinand lived in the former monastery alone and eventually with his second wife – opera singer Elise Hensler, ennobled as the Countess of Edla.

In 1910, Pena Palace was classified as a Portugese National Monument and was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. To this very day, Pena Palace’s architectural silhouette reveals its two distinct construction eras as a monastery-turned-palace via two wings. In the former monastery also known as Old Palace, private apartments predominate the space. Meanwhile, state rooms are primarily found in the New Palace aka King Ferdinand II’s newer additions.

Getting There

While I won’t outline how to get to Sintra and Pena Palace in this guide as I outline it here, I will mention that most people visiting Pena Palace will be coming via a day trip from Lisbon or via driving/visit to Sintra. My bestie Shivani and I opted to do a Lisbon to Sintra day trip via one of the many group tours offered to Pena Palace and the beach town of Cascais. 

Tickets to Pena Palace

Depending on how you choose to visit Pena Palace as well as other key sights of interest within Sintra, tickets to Pena Palace can be purchased via the Parques de Sintra website. There are a variety of ways to visit Pena Palace and experience it, including a guided tour, combined Royal palaces of Sintra pass, and unique experiences throughout the seasons. If you opt to do a group tour to Pena Palace from Lisbon, then I highly recommend booking your day trip experience through Modern Tours who took care of our admission and visit in addition to transportation, which is the excellent tour operator that Shivani and I used. With Modern Tours’ tours to Pena Palace, visitors have the option to select how much of Pena Palace they want to visit, whether just the exterior or for a tour of the interior (which I highly recommend doing!). 

Know Before You Go

  • It is worth noting that to get to Pena Palace, it is an intense uphill walk up to Pena Palace (especially for non-hikers/uphill walkers like myself!). Most visitors to Pena Palace will have to walk this uphill/downhill walk to get to/from the palace. The walk is on, if I recall, a gravel/dirt trail in the woodlands of the Sintra mountains. Once at Pena Palace, there are marble staircases and walkways. Be sure to plan accordingly, especially if there is rain.
  • Upon entering the Pena Palace, guests will have to go through a bag security checkpoint. 
  • If you booked a timed entry experience, Pena Palace is a timed experience, but typically visitors can still enter on the day that they booked for – be sure to arrive at least 10-15 minutes before your timed the entry slot.
  • Take a moment to savor this incredible palace and gallery and all of its masterpieces within it! Truly, Pena Palace is a magnificent work of art like no other!!
  • Personally, I would budget 2-4 hours at Pena Palace including the uphill/downhill walk upon arrival when visiting. It is SO easy to get lost in the museums and gardens and you’ll want to maximize your time there. Truly, you won’t want to miss anything!!
  • Cameras are allowed, however, flash photography is prohibited.
  • Wear comfortable, suitable shoes for uphill climbing on marble staircases and in the gardens – which are present through parts of the palace. In fact, I have a guide on comfortable + stylish flats for travel if you need any inspiration!

Is Pena Palace Worth Visiting?!

YES!!!!

Personally, I have always been someone who wants to go out of my way to visit the palace when in Europe. In fact, Shivani immediately jumped at the opportunity upon me suggesting to live out our Princess dreams together at Pena Palace!

The outside of Pena Palace is super gorgeous and unique especially with ALLLL of the vast tiles that are so unique (and what Portugal is well-known for!). Fun fact: you can see the Atlantic Ocean via the lush Sintra mountains on some parts of Pena Palace’s grounds and gardens which is SOOOO beautiful!! While at an extra cost to visit the interiors of Pena Palace, I found it to be highly worth the cost, as it’s always fun to see the gorgeous interiors and decor especially as a self-proclaimed grand millennial.

In fact, I wish our tour gave us more time to meander and get lost on Pena Palace’s grounds, as it’s all SOOOO magnificent!

Wrap-Up

Truly, Pena Palace is 10000% worth a visit, especially if you have the time when visiting Lisbon! If you’re wondering: is Pena Palace worth visiting?! The answer is a resounding yes! Truly, this palace and its adjacent grounds are so stunning, you’ll want to plan another visit after spending hours there!
